The Saturday, July 27, 1901, edition of the Madison, South Dakota, newspaper carried the following obituary: AFTER YEARS OF SUFFERING Mrs. Addie A. Shepard Succumbs in This City, Friday Afternoon -- Confined to Her Bed for Eight Years Mrs. Addie A. Shepard succumbed to an illness of nearly twenty years duration at the home of her parents-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. L.D. [Luther David] Shepard, in this city [Madison, SD] at 2 o'clock Friday [July 26, 1901] afternoon, brief mention of which was made in these columns last evening. Had she lived, deceased would have been 41 years of age next month. Miss Addie A. McDuffee was born in Fayette county, Iowa, in September 1860 [sic, 1859]. She was united in marriage with Herbert A. Shepard, son of Mr. and Mrs. L.D. Shepard, of this place [Madison, SD], then residents of Fayette county, Iowa, on July 28, 1878, and together the your couple immediately removed to this [Lake] county [then Dakota Territory], taking up their residence on a farm here, where they continued to live for a number of years. Their union was blessed with one child, Ethel M. [Margie], now Mrs. C.E. [Clarence Emery] Bartlett, who survives both parents, her father now been deceased about nine years [in 1892]. For nearly twenty years the deceased had been a great sufferer from inflammatory rheumatism, the affliction becoming painfully acute some either years ago, compelling the sufferer to take to her bed, to which she had been confined continuously ever since up to the time when death relieved her suffering. During the past two years the disease had assumed a chronic form, causing the ever patient and uncomplaining sufferer to endure the most intense agony. On several occasions during the last year it was believed that the end was not far distant, and when the final attack came the inevitable was not wholly unexpected. In her death there should be little cause for grief, since in life she was the object of such mortal suffering. As the end approached, kind, loving hands administered, as they had for years, all that science and human knowledge could suggest to relieve the suffering of their loved one, but the time had come and nothing could avail. And, surrounded by her only child and daughter, her brother H. [Harris] McDuffee, from Colorado, and a large circle of other relatives and sorrowing friends, she passed into the great unknown. Funeral services, conducted by the Rev. C.E. Matteson, pastor of the Methodist Episcopal church, of which the deceased was a member, were held from the residence of Mr. and Mrs. L.D. Shepard at 4 o'clock this afternoon [July 28, 1901]. Interment was made at Madison [SD] cemetery, adjoining the last resting place of her deceased husband. It had been intended to postpone the burial until Sunday afternoon and announcement to that effect had been made, but owing to the warm weather it became necessary to alter these arrangements.
