ALICE CONTEGNI PASSED AWAY AT AGE OF 99 YEARS. Husband, Still Well, Fought Under Garibaldi in His Italian War. Mrs. Alice Contegni, one of the oldest, if not the oldest woman in Bay county , died at her home in Hampton last week. Deceased had resided in that township for only about a year, but had lived in Merritt for over thirty-eight years, and was well known in the latter place. She is said to have been 99 years of age and always robust and healthy until her final illness, which was grip, hastening her death by complications. Her husband, Joseph Contegni, and two children, a son, Stephen Ryan, and a daughter, Mrs. A. Frinch, and five grand children, survive her. She was interred in Elm Lawn under the Baptist ritual, Rev. W. P. Lovett officiating. The parents of the deceased came from France to Canada in 1792 and she was born in Canada in the early part of the last century. She was a an early age placed in a convent at Quebec and here she received a good education. Her last husband came to Canada in the sixties after having seen service under Garibaldi in his was in Italy. He was ten years his wife's junior, but is healthy at present and indications are that he will see the century mark in his life.
