IN MEMORIAM Wenatchee (WA) World Adelaide Barnhart died Saturday, January 24, 2004 in Cashmere Convalescent Center at the age of 92. Born Dorothy Adelaide Dayton at Fonda, Iowa, October 12, 1911, she was the youngest of three daughters of F. I. and May Dayton, her sisters Jessie and Lorene and her parents preceding her in death. Adelaide lived in Towner County, Teddy Township, North Dakota, from 1911 to 1930. She was graduated from Egeland High School in June of 1928. After attending a teacher's college in Valley City, ND for one year, she taught grades one through eight for one term. On July 8, 1930, she became the bride of Roy Barnhart, and in 1931 they moved to Wenatchee [WA] for a year before moving "back to the farm" in North Dakota, where they lived for five years before finally returning to become permanent residents of the Wenatchee area. In the earlier years, however, they did spend limited time living and working at Wilbur, Grand Coulee Dam, and at the Dwinell orchards near Oroville. After a long career as a carpenter/house builder, Roy died following heart surgery in February of 1962. Adelaide is the cherished mother of Jerrold Barnhart of Ballard [WA], Roger Barnhart of Cashmere [WA], and Marian Stillman and Linda Merriman of Wenatchee. An increasing source of joy for Adelaide in her latter decades was her "little people," 11 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren. All in her family have felt and appreciated her light touch upon their lives which often made itself felt through her special talents of needle craft and "words," both of which have decorated and enhance their homes and lives. Among her many creations with her needle are elaborate Christmas stockings for the "grands" and the "great grands," countless tree ornaments, several entire Christmas villages, and precisely and beautifully done wall hangings, that now decorate the family homes. Adelaide's word talent always appeared in crosswords and scrabble but perhaps more importantly enabled her to create many poems celebrating her family. She wrote a poem for each grandchild's graduation and one long poem for a family reunion, which she committed to memory. Along with many famous poems she learned in high school, she could recite it upon request and did so only a few days prior to her death. The practical side of her nature was also apparent. "I like to think," she often said as she thought of her children, "that Roy and I helped them to make a good start to their lives." Adelaide was not given to overstatement. Betts Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
