As a young woman, Adeline moved... Read More	Adeline Selma Paauw Helma August 28, 1918 – May 1, 2012 Adeline was born in Platte SD to Sietse Paauw and Edna (Eke Pranger) Paauw. She was the oldest of four children, followed by sister Juelle, brother Don, and sister June. Adeline was a star basketball player during her school years, and, with her sister Juelle, part of an undefeated team that went on to win the CMD Championship of 1936. Like many young people of their era, they persevered through the Great Depression by working for nickels and dimes, doing everything from setting hair to housecleaning. As a young woman, Adeline moved to Sioux Falls SD to work as a telephone operator. It was there that she formed some of the most enduring friendships of her life. It was also there that she was among the first in her area to receive and relay the news of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Adeline was very close to her siblings her entire life, and saved precious letters written to her from her beloved brother Don during his service in the Navy during WWII. The letters serve as an enduring portrait of the love of family, the difficulties and sacrifices of combatants as well as the family back at home, and a chronicle of one family's personal courage. Adeline and her youngest sister June maintained an especially close connection throughout their lives. When June and her family moved to Denver for a time, June considered Adeline her "mainstay"; feelings reciprocated by her sister. When June moved back to SD, they stayed connected over the years without fail by weekly Saturday phones calls, cards, and letters, sharing news and always many laughs. Adeline married Arthur John Helma on August 30, 1948 in Sioux Falls SD. Donald James was born in 1950, and after a short time in Burlington IA, the family moved to Colorado in 1951, and lived in Aurora for nearly 60 years. J. Scott (1952), Laurie K. (1954), and David R. (1955) completed the family. Adeline will always be remembered for her unrelenting positive attitude, friendly and outgoing spirit, wonderful cooking and baking. Her generous heart will also be long remembered by the many people who shared feasts at her holiday tables, and fresh baked cookies, cinnamon rolls, and homemade bread in her kitchen. Adeline had a wonderful sense of humor and always a kind word, warm hug, and strong shoulder for anyone who needed her. In later years, following the death of her husband in 2001, she continued to live independently and very happily for 12 years in a retirement community. She delighted in watching her grandchildren grow up and thrive. She adored fresh flowers and her family always made sure she had a lot of them to fuss over and tend to. More often than not, she would divide her bouquets to share in the chapel for all to enjoy. Adeline was a deeply spiritual, non-religious person who lived her life by the Golden Rule. She will be deeply missed by her devoted sisters, Juelle Wendt of Platte SD, and June Rommen of Geddes SD, her four children, their spouses Meg, Peter, and Sabrina, her three grandchildren, Donovan, Christopher, and Kailyn, her nieces and nephews, and her legion of fans and friends.
