Description	:	The following is an excerpt from a letter dated August 1972 from the granddaughter of Adelle Meier to her daughter (i.e., from Ethel Marie [Cundiff] Anderson to Margie Valine [Anderson] Stout): "The tornado was in Pulaski Iowa June 1885 and completely destroyed their home. Grandma was killed also baby bro 1 yr old (William) Mother was severely injured and also Uncle Albert and weren’t expected to live. Uncle Albert had head injuries that bothered him all his life and he finally hung himself. Grandpa had broken leg & was blown several feet from house & when he finally drug himself... Uncle Albert had head injuries that bothered him all his life and he finally hung himself. Grandpa had broken leg & was blown several feet from house & when he finally drug himself to look for family and to find wife & baby dead & 2 severely injured. Was a terrible shock & no home. Mother couldn’t remember when her birthday was the Mo or day for sure but always had Oct. 15 1877 she was 8 yrs old time of storm. "Grandpa came to America at age 30 yrs and married 3 yrs later to Adelia Wagonblatz. She was 32 yrs old when killed. I don’t know how long before he married Emelie Bechtold but think kids were all grown. Yes I do they were married 1885 so kids would have been grown. "Adelia Wagonblatz born 1853 don’t have day or month died June 1885. Emelie Bechtold born Dec 18-1866. Uncle Albert & Aunt Blanche Meier Edna was her middle name. Her maiden name was Burrows. "I have a clipping in scrap book glued down course of the tornado tat that was 40 yrs ago & described it & wish I could take foto [sic] of it. Maybe I can write the part about Grandpao [sic] that discribes [sic] better than I told it. The tornado then jumped about a mile & half to the Solomon Meier home on the farm owned by Andrew Power. Here the work of death began. When Mr. Meier became conscious he found himself on a plowed field with his mouth full of mud and his clothes nearly all torn from his body. His house and barn had vanished. He could see nothing of his wife & four children who had but a few moments before sat at his side in their home. He found that a piece of board had struck him on his leg between the thigh & knee going to the bone and then separating one piece coming out at lower end of leg and other at upper end of his leg. Although badly crippled he searched for his family until he found his wife (and little 2 yr old girl) both dead. That part is wrong as was boy. About 200 yards from where house stood. The remaining 3 children were found some distance from house under brush that had blown on top of them. Two of them were believed to be fatally injured (mother & Uncle Albert).
