Born 1873-01-26 Säfsnäs, Gravendal Sweden. ------------------------------------------------------- Alphena Holmberg, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. J. Holmberg was born in Stockholm, Sweden July 18, 1871. She came with her parents when a young girl to America and settled in Boone county, Iowa. The mother dying when the children were young. Alphena went to live at the Shipley home north of Beaver, Iowa. On February 12, 1896 she was married to Edwin Last and set up farming in Greene county, Iowa. To this union five children were born, three girls and two boys. Warren E., Clarence W., Marian M., Mabyl B., and Myrtle M. who passed away in 1919. In 1918 the family left the farm and moved to Dana, Iowa where the home was maintained until the fall of 1943 when the mother left to make her home with her children, Mr. Last, having passed away on October 26, 1940. In Novermber, 1942 she suffered a bad fall from which she never completely recovered. On June 1, 1944 she went to live with her daughter Marian Short in Des Moines. Her condition growing worse she was entered in a nursing home where she had the best of care and attention, however, her condition became worse and she passed away Saturday morning, October 21, 1944. She leaves to mourn her departure her for children: Marian Short of Des Moines, Mabyl Gifft of Cedar Rapids, Warren Last of Minneapolis, Clarence Last of Minneapolis. Four grandchildren: Sharon Last and Sandra Last, both of Minneapolis, Robert Gifft of Cedar Rapids, Edwin Gifft, Jr., in the United States Army Air Force. One sister, Mrs. Augusta Passot of Chicago; four half-sisters: Mrs. Hattie Shelley of Boone, Mrs. Edna Sellers of Boone, Mrs. Olga Leitch of Boone, Mrs. Emily Menzies of Boone; one half-brother, Elmer Homlberg of Ft. Dodge. As a girl she attended the Grand Ridge church in Boone County. She was a very kind and loving mother and had a patience that was admired by everyone.
