Description	:	Agnes Adelia Katrina was born November 27, 1909 in on her father's homestead in Roseland Township, Burke County, North Dakota. She was the fifth of nine children born to Lewis & Karin (Risberg) Nelson, immigrants from Halsingland, Sweden. She received the gift of God's grace through holy baptism on February 2, 1910. Read More	Agnes Adelia Katrina was born November 27, 1909 in on her father's homestead in Roseland Township, Burke County, North Dakota. She was the fifth of nine children born to Lewis & Karin (Risberg) Nelson, immigrants from Halsingland, Sweden. She received the gift of God's grace through holy baptism on February 2, 1910. The Pastor was Gabriel Pearson with the Elmdale Swedish Lutheran Congregation in Niobe. Agnes began her education in the Beck School House west of the parental homestead. She and her siblings walked the mile to school each day unless it was cold and their father would take them in the horse drawn wagon or sleigh. As a child Agnes enjoyed spending overnight visits with her maternal grandmother Anna Risberg in Niobe. She said she like to go on Saturday and would walk with milk and bread to her grandmother's house on the west edge of Niobe. Sunday she could attend Sunday School and then worship service with her grandmother. The services were conducted in the Swedish language and Agnes spoke and read Swedish fluently, as did her siblings. Agnes began her Confirmation studies in the Elmdale Swedish Lutheran church and studied the scriptures and Martin Luther's Catechism. After completion, she "read for the Pastor" and was invited to affirm her faith before the congregation on June 3, 1923. She was welcomed as a member of the congregation and invited to the communion table. After completing her lower level education she began her high school education in the Kenmare Public School. Agnes, as her siblings before her, received room and board with their paternal grandparents, John & Karin Nelson, while attending high school. She graduated from Kenmare High School in 1927. In those days, in order to get a teaching authorization, an individual only needed to attend classes at a school of higher education for 12 weeks. She attended in 1928 and received her teaching certificate from Minot State Teachers College (now known as Minot State University) in Minot, North Dakota. Agnes was a high school friend of Lily Noren. It was through the Noren family that she was introduced to William "Bill" Peterson. Agnes and Bill were married at the Augustana Swedish Lutheran Church in Minot, North Dakota on May 10, 1928. Agnes said the winter of 1928, went to Bill's folk's in Loretta Township, near Northwood, North Dakota and their son, William Nelson Peterson was born on February 14, 1929 on the farm. When Billy was six weeks old they came back for her grandma Karin Nelson's funeral and it was decided to live in the Niobe area. They stayed with grandma Anna Risberg in Niobe at first and then moved to her grandfather John Nelson's farm, west of Niobe. They had some chickens and "got by" with Bill farming. Agnes taught in rural Burke County schools the terms of 1930-31, 1931-32 and 1932-1933. They were living on John Nelson's homestead when Billy started school in Niobe. In 1935, they returned to the farm in Loretta Township (near Northwood) and Bill worked with the W.P.A. and then later farmed. On May 10, 1942, they welcomed their second child, Karen Anne, who was born in the hospital in Northwood, ND. They farmed here until 1945 when they moved to Kenmare to live in her grandpa John Nelson's house. He was 98 at the time and living with his son, Lewis Nelson. It was in 1945 that Bill and Agnes purchased the house from John Nelson, as well as farming property known as "the school land." It was at this time that the State of North Dakota implemented new standards of accreditation for teaching. Agnes' sister Lillian Mogren was attending Minot State Teachers College and Ike Mogren told Agnes she might as well ride along and get certified. So Agnes went back to college and got certified, however, she said he never taught again. They continued to make their home in Kenmare and bill farmed until retirement. Agnes lost her husband on July 15, 1976. He was a patient in the Trinity Hospital in Minot and she stayed with me in my apartment. I would take her to the hospital each day and go pick her up in the evening. Agnes was my great aunt (grandmother's sister) and we were blessed to have her in our lives. She would come and spend a few days with us at a time in our little apartment in Minot. The time would go so quickly when she visited us. I fondly remember how she would find humor in things and laugh in a manner that soon had us laughing at her laugh! It was fun to drop in at Aunt Agnes' house in Kenmare on the days she was baking bread. Such a heavenly aroma and she always invited us to sit up and eat some bread with our coffee. She had a chokecherry bush behind the garage and made jam from the berries and she would put the block of cheese on the table and tell us to cut a slice the size we wanted. She was known in the family for her delicious Swedish meatballs. Agnes had her opinion about things, whether it was politics or religion or other things. She was a confident woman who stood her ground when she believed she was "right." I always admired that trait in her. She remained faithful to her confirmation vows and was a member of the Nazareth Lutheran Church in Kenmare where she was an active member. One of the things that brought the most joy to Agnes was talking about her grandchildren, Mark, David, William, Laura and Kara. She loved them deeply and beamed with pride when she spoke of them. (She did tell some humorous stories about them as well.) Agnes passed away on Tuesday, April 7, 1992 in the Trinity Hosptial in Minot, ND. Funeral services were held in the Nazareth Lutheran Church in Kenmare on April 11th and she was laid to rest beside her husband in the Lakeview Cemetery. Written by John Mogren December 16, 2020
