Rep. 4 April 1935 Mrs. Agnes Simmons Mrs. Agnes Simmons, daughter of George and Catherine Batchelor, was born March 20, 1848 in New York City and passed away at her home on Vernon Prairie, shortly after noon, Friday, March 15, 1935, within a few days of her 87th birthday anniversary. In 1851 she came with her parents in Cincinnati, Ohio, where they remained for ten months, coming to Van Buren county, Iowa in 1852 and locating on a farm on Vernon Prairie. Sept. 17, 1872 she was married to Mr. Robert Simmons. They went to Appanoose county for a short time but soon came to the farm which has since been her home. Mr. Simmons died Sept. 3, 1888. To this union were born two children, Mrs. Kate Anson, of Keosauqua, Iowa and Robert Earl at the home. Both were privileged to be at her bedside at her passing. She also leaves to mourn six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, one brother, Jas. W. Batchelor, of Bonaparte, Iowa and one sister, Mrs. Kate Wilson, of Astoria, Ore., a number of nephews and nieces and a host of friends. Her parents, with the following brothers and sisters preceded her in death: John and George Batchelor, Mrs. Maggie Simmons, Mrs. Mary Hornbaker and Mrs. Emma Reith. She united with the Presbyterian church when a young woman and always kept the faith, later transferring to the nearer Methodist church; attended church services and helped whenever and wherever she could. Almost the entire life of this active pioneer woman was spent in this community, so words can poorly express the feelings of loss to the family and entire neighborhood in the departure of this mother, sister, willing helper and adviser of so many years. Funeral services were held from the Presbyterian church in Bonaparte, Sunday afternoon, March 17, a 2 o'clock, in charge of the Rev. M.E. Hayes, pastor of the Keosauqua Methodist church.
