Agnes Catherine, daughter of William and Ellen Carmichael, was born November 24, 1862, near New Market, Ia. She passed away at her home in New Market, July 24, 1933, at the age of 70 years and 8 months. She was united in marriage March 1880 to Eli Johnson, who preceded her in death June 1909. To this union were born seven children. John, who died when fifteen years of age, Myrtle, also preceding her in death, Clifford, killed in action during the World War just 15 years before his mother was buried, Arnold, Mae and Frances of New Market, and Ellen of Chehalis, Wash. Her entire life was spent in or near New Market. In early life she became a Christian, uniting with the Christian church later in life. She was a kind and loving wife and mother, always thoughtful of others and willing to do what human hands could for comfort of those she knew. Her large circle of friends speaks louder than words of her kindness to friends and neighbors. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, being the only gold star mother in the New Market unit. She leaves to mourn her departure, four children, Arnold, Mrs Mae Journey, Mrs Frances Alger of New Market, and Mrs Ellen Nixon of Chehalis, Wash, eight grandchildren; three great grandchildren, three sisters, Mrs Martha Pace, Mrs Emily Clabaugh of New Market, Mrs Bertha Stephens of Kearney, Nebr, two brothers, William and Eura Carmichael of Clarinda, besides a host of other relatives and friends.
