''''''''''''''''' Butler County Press (David City, Nebr.), March 14, 1946, p. 4, col. 4 AGNES MASHEK DIES LEAVES MANY DESCENDANTS Funeral Services Were Held In Ulysses, March 2 Ulysses, March 9 – Funeral services for Mrs. Agnes Mashek, 77, who died Thursday, Feb. 28, were held in St. Mary's Catholic church, March 2, with Rev. M. Downey in charge. Burial was in the Catholic cemetery by the grave of her husband, Charles Mashek, who died 37 years ago. Pallbearers were Arthur Jones, James Korinek, Frank Navratil, Emil Prochaska, Frank Payne and James Ward. Mrs. Mashek was one of seven children, born to Mr. and Mrs. James Duffek on February 16, 1869, while they were residents of Moravia. At six years she and her family came to the United States to locate on a farm near Bruno. Of the Duffek family, there are now but three survivors, Andrew of Bee, Emil of Dwight and James of Staplehurst. Married to Charles Masek in 1887, a home was established on a farm near Ulysses, where the husband and father was taken by death 22 years later. Of the twelve children born to Mr. and Mrs. Mashek there are ten surviving, including five sons, Charles, Jr., of Omaha and Anton, James, Paul and Emil of Ulysses, and five daughters, Mrs. Albin Krchnavy of Lisbon, N. D., Mrs. Loyal Benson of Seward, Mrs. Joe Birkel of Shelby, Mrs. George Navratil of Rising City, and Mrs. Joe Sloup of Bee. Other descendants are 21 grandchildren, two of whom are in the armed forces, and 12 great grandchildren. All of the children and Mrs. Mashek's three brothers and a majority of their families were in attendance at the funeral services. Others coming from away were Mrs. Emma Mashek, Mrs. Ed Sauser and son of David City; George Mashek of Valparaiso; Mrs. Anton Petrzelka and Joe Mashek of Prague; Mr. and Mrs. James Crapenhoft of Rising City, and Kenneth Oppdiger of Columbus. A devout Catholic and church member Mrs. Mashek made many friends as she went through life. Although she was ever kept busy with household duties she found time to work with her flowers. Agnes Duffek was born to James and Rose Krska Duffek on Feb. 16, 1869, near Sedlec, Moravia. At the age of six years she came with her parents to the United States and settled near Bruno. She was married to Charles Mashek, Nov. 26, 1887 at the Plasi Catholic church by Rev. Gordon Hulz. To this union 12 were born. Thomas and Emma preceded her in death. Surviving children are Mrs. Albin Kirchnavy of Lisbon, N. D.; Charlie Mashek of Omaha, Mrs. Loyal Benson of Seward, Mrs. Joe Birkel of Shelby, Mrs. George Navratil of Rising City, Mrs. Joe Sloup of Bee, and Anton, James, Paul and Emil Mashek of Ulysses. The family lived on a farm west of Ulysses, where the husband and father was taken by death July 24, 1909, leaving the mother to rear the family. Mrs. Mashek is also survived by three brothers, Andrew Duffek of Bee, Emil Duffek of Dwight and James Duffek of Staplehurst, 21 grandchildren two grandsons serving in the armed forces and 12 great grandchildren. A brother, Frank Duffek and a sister, Mrs. Thomas Wolf preceded her in death. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Father Downey at the St. Mary's Catholic church at Ulysses Saturday, March 2, and the remains were laid to rest by the side of her husband in the Catholic cemetery at Ulysses. All her children were present at the funeral services. The pallbearers were Emil Prochaska, Frank Payne, James Ward, James Korinek, Frank Navratil and Arthur Jones.
