Agnes Loy was born on November 16, 1917 in O’Neill, to David Nelson Loy and Lila Belle (Jones) Loy. She attended O’Neill Public Schools through the eighth grade. In 1934, she married Ray Willard Lawrence. They had four children: Darlene (Stillborn), Robert Leroy, Bonney Louise, and Virginia Rae. The couple operated a trucking company and feed store together. He died suddenly in 1967. Agnes met Don Douglass of Neligh, and after months of him asking her to go dancing, she finally agreed. The couple was married in 1971 and she described Don as the love of her life. She had two step-daughters, Susan and Diane. Agnes later worked driving the lead car while Don drove truck, hauling mobile homes. Agnes lived in O’Neill, Neligh, back to O’Neill, Columbus and for the last 5 years in Stromsburg. She was baptized, confirmed, and a 78-year member of the First Presbyterian Church in O’Neill. She was active in the American Legion Auxiliary, VFW Women’s Auxiliary, the Eagles Club, Symphony Chapter #316 Order of the Eastern Star in O’Neill, and the O’Neill Golden Age Senior Center. Agnes loved to crochet and quilt, read and do word search puzzles. She liked country western and big band music, In her younger years she enjoyed swimming, gardening and canning, raising and butchering chickens, sewing, camping and fishing. She was an avid card player and enjoyed penny slots. Agnes is especially known for her spunk and sassy attitude and her homemade egg noodles and chicken soup. She is survived by her two step-daughters, Susan Hansen and her husband, Ken, of Norfolk, and Diane Horst of Omaha; 16 grandchildren; great grandchildren; great-great grandchildren; and two great-great-great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Agnes was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Ray Lawrence in 1967, Don Douglas in 1988; her 4 children, Darlene in December 1935, Robert Lawrence Sr. in 2000, Bonney Kopejtka Smith in 1996, and Virginia Alder in 1973; one granddaughter, Jean Lawrence in 2006.
