She was born in Frankford on June 12, 1922 and was the daughter of the late Walter and Elizabeth Holloway Long. She grew up in Selbyville and graduated from Selbyville High School in 1939. She attended the University of Delaware and graduated in 1943 with a degree in Physical Education. Mumford Agnes L. Mumford AGE: 92 • Selbyville Agnes L. Mumford, age 92, of Selbyville died peacefully at home on Monday, November 17, 2014. She was born in Frankford on June 12, 1922 and was the daughter of the late Walter and Elizabeth Holloway Long. She grew up in Selbyville and graduated from Selbyville High School in 1939. She attended the University of Delaware and graduated in 1943 with a degree in Physical Education. Her first teaching job was at Bridgeville High School, where she coached the men's basketball team to an undefeated season. The late Senator Thurman Adams always thought of her as his favorite teacher. She loved the beach and the Long family was one of the first squatters on Fenwick Island, MD (now Ocean City). She and her husband Warren eventually bought and refurbished the house and it remains on the same spot today. Agnes was a dedicated wife, mother and grandmother. She enjoyed sewing, making draperies, bed spreads, costumes for Halloween, "jams" for her sons and clothes for her grandchildren. She also kept busy learning to paint, playing contract and duplicate bridge. However, after her children were grown, she discovered golf and went on to be a Club Champion at Sussex Pines Golf Club and at Ocean Pines Golf Club. The family wishes to extend their sincere gratitude to Delaware Hospice and Griswold Home Care caregivers Brenda Briddell, Sharen Rogers, Cynthia Riordon, Alfreda Sample and Goldie Tankard. She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Warren H. Mumford of Selbyville; two sons, Jeffrey W. Mumford and his wife Paula of Selbyville and Stuart W. Mumford and his wife Donna of Bishopville; four grandchildren, J. Scott Mumford and his wife Elise, Wendy E. Bartlett and her husband Tim, Walter W. Mumford and William S. Mumford and four great grandchildren. A funeral service will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, November 22 at Salem United Methodist Church in Selbyville with Rev. Walter Crocker officiating. Friends may call an hour before the service at the church. Burial will be in Bishopville Cemetery in Bishopville. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent in her memory to Salem United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 410, Selbyville, DE 19975 for the Food Pantry or the Good Samaritan Fund.
