Description	:	Agnes Westphal was born in the city of Kiel, Denmark, on the 26th day of June, 1847 and passed away in her home at Ransom, Kansas, on the 21st day of November, 1940 at the age of 93 years, 4 months and 26 days. She came to America with her parents in the month of May, 1865, and located at Lyons, Iowa, where she met and married M.E. Doerschlag on February 23rd, 1866. Read More	Agnes Westphal was born in the city of Kiel, Denmark, on the 26th day of June, 1847 and passed away in her home at Ransom, Kansas, on the 21st day of November, 1940 at the age of 93 years, 4 months and 26 days. She came to America with her parents in the month of May, 1865, and located at Lyons, Iowa, where she met and married M.E. Doerschlag on February 23rd, 1866. They lived in Lyons, Iowa, until 1870 when they moved to Minnesota in the timber country where the soldier husband could file on timber land, and there they took an active part in the development of a new country. In 1884 the family moved to Kansas and settling on a homestead 8 miles northwest of Ransom where Agnes and her husband again took an active part in the development of a desert country. She was a pioneer in the true sense of the word having a part in the development of two new regions, one in Minnesota and the other in Kansas and the hardships endured, were many and the same as those that all early pioneers had to bear in the settlement of new countries. She was the mother of seven children, four daughters and three sons, five of whom survive her, Mrs. Ella Marcy, Mrs. Olga Schreiber and Mrs. Gussie Stowe of Ransom, Otto of Topeka, Kansas, and Walter of Ransom; she was preceded in death by her husband, one daughter, Louise, and one son, Edward. Her life has been a long and useful one, as a pioneer of the north woods she ministered to the wants of her family and did those noble deeds in giving help to those needy and worthy neighbors. As a pioneer here in western Kansas more than fifty years ago, most of us can and do realize the trials and hardships that became a part of her life; that she met them squarely and conquered these adversities bravely, is a tribute to the life of this pioneer mother. She was baptised in the Lutheran faith during infancy and was a firm believer and a devoted member of her faith during all the hardships of pioneer days; in the later years after coming to Ransom she became a member of the Methodist Church and has been loyal and steadfast in and to the church. Her whole life was one of service to others, she enjoyed most the making of gifts for her children and grandchildren and next to that making gifts for her friends. Grandma, as she was familiarly known, numbers her friends, only by those who were her acquaintances. Grandma leaves, besides her children, to mourn her loss, twenty-six grandchildren, fifty-five great-grandchildren and ten great-great-grandchildren, besides a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at the Ransom Methodist Church Saturday at 2:00 p.m. The choir, composed of Mrs. Ross, Verla Dieffenbach, Cleo Amstutz, Ila Fish, Lila McNinch, Mrs. Jess Dieffenbach, Mr. Garten, Mr. Ross, Mr. Jess Dieffenbach and Wayne Garrelts, sang “Rock of Ages” and “Lead Kindly Light.” They were accompanied by Miss Dorris Marhofer. Rev. Fish, accompanied by Ila Fish, sang a solo entitled “Eastern Gate.” The body was laid to rest in the Ransom Cemetery. Ness Co. News, Nov. 28, 1940
