Description	:	May 31, 1926: Born in Hingham, MA to Bertha Fiset Yohannan, housewife, and Joash Isaac Yohannan, US Navy physician. From about 1928 - 1936: Father's navy doctor assignments took them to such places as Port Au Prince, Haiti, Brooklyn, NY, Guam, Manila in the Philippines, and Norfolk, VA. From 1936 - 1940: In 1936 or early 1937 Bertha Yohannan married Major William H. Beers, assigned to US Army Expeditionary Forces, China at the US Consulate in Shanghai, China. Mom subsequently lived in Tienstin, now know as Tienjien, China, possibly Diamond Island, ME off the coast of Portland, ME, where her stepfather was assigned to a coastal artillery unit, Syracuse, NY, where he worked with the NY State National Guard, and Fort Leavenworth, KS. While at Fort Leavenworth, at age 14, Mom was enrolled at Saint Mary's Academy (high school level) and College outside of Leavenworth. She was strongly influenced by the order of nuns that taught there, The Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth, a teaching and nursing order. 1944/45 - 1947: Upon graduation in June, 1944, she attended nursing school on Long Island, NY, but by late 1944-early 1945, decided, while there, to join the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth, so she went to their motherhouse, which was attached to St. Mary's Academy and College. While there, she served as a postulant (nun candidate) and then as a novice, which meant taking temporary vows and wearing a white veil instead of the black one she would have gotten if she had made her final vows. By late 1945 or early 1946, she decided that convent life was also not for her. By the time she left, her stepfather, now COL Beers had retired from the Army at the end of WW II, and he and Grandma had settled in CA. Mom joined them out there, and decided to major in journalism at Chafee Junior College in Ontario, CA, during the 1946-47 academic year. During the summer of 1947, she worked as a nanny, taking care of three little boys. Meanwhile, COL Beers got a position as logistics director and overseer of Displaced Persons Camps in southern Germany with the International Refugee Organization (IRO). Mom decided not to return to Chafee and decided to go with her mother and join her stepfather in Germany. They arrived there in late December, 1947. It was on New Year's eve, 1947, that she met 2LT James B. Vaught at the Hotel Ritter in Heidelberg, which served then as the officers club. 1948 - 1978: July 31, 1948: Mom and Dad marry in Bad Kissingen, Germany. Aug 1949: Dad's three year tour in Germany comes to an end, and he and Mom go to Fort Campbell, KY, where Dad is assigned to an airborne regiment. April 18, 1951: Daughter Cathryn is born! Dec 25, 1951: Dad deploys to Korea, Mom spends the next year in Claremont, CA. Jan, 1953: Mom leaves by freighter for Japan with Cathy to join Dad there. During this time, Dad rotates back and forth between Japan and Korea. Feb 1, 1954: James B. Vaught, Jr. is born. April, 1954: Dad rotates back to the States to report for the Infantry Advance Course at Fort Benning, GA. Aug, 1955: Dad assigned as a JROTC instructor at Sylvan HS in Atlanta, GA. He also tries flight school in Texas. Dec. 1956: Dad rotates to Fort Bragg, NC as a company commander in an airborne regiment. Aug 1957: Dad rotates to Fort Leavenworth, KS, to attend Command and General Staff College. Aug 1958: Dad rotates to Third Army HQ at Fort McPherson, GA. Nov 9, 1959: Son Stephen is born. June 1960: Dad rotates to Fort Benning to the 2nd Infantry Division and transitions with it to Korea. Jan 1961- May 1962: Mom remains in Atlanta while Dad serves in Korea. Aug 1962: Dad attends the Armed Forces Staff College in Norfolk, VA. Jan 1963: Dad is assigned to the Pentagon in Wash, DC. Mom and rest of family remain in place for the next nine years while Dad does two Vietnam Tours and attends the National War College. Sept. 1968: After 23 years, Mom decides she wants to resume her nursing studies, and enrolls at Marymount College School of Nursing, in Arlington, VA. Aug 1972: Mom joins Dad at Fort Bragg, NC. While there, Dad gets promoted to Brigadier General and she becomes a General's wife. Aug 1975: Dad gets transferred to Izmir, Turkey, but Mom remains behind to keep an eye on Steve plus, as an only child, be available for her mother, who was in assisted living. Aug 1977: Dad is transferred to Fort Stewart, GA. Mar 1979: Mom and Dad divorce after more than 30 1/2 years of marriage. Mar 1979- April 2019: For the many of the next 40 years Mom traveled as much as she could to see friends and family . She located to Texas in 1979 to live with Cathy, who was stationed at Fort Hood. She made friends there and got active with the local Catholic community. She never did work as a nurse! She eventually got alimony and her military dependent privileges back through a court settlement. After joining Cathy in the Washington DC area, she also became active with helping to care for Cathy's daughter Alyssa, who was born prematurely and suffered from multiple handicaps as a a result. She also joined Cathy and Alyssa in Georgia, where Cathy had decided to move after retiring from the Army. By the time she hit her 80's, Mom's mobility and later her health began a gradual and then steady decline. A stroke suffered in Sept. 2018 put her on home hospice care. She passed away peacefully in her sleep on April 29, 2019. If I had one word to describe Mom's passion, it would have been travel. By growing up in military families, she became a rolling stone, as one can see from all the places she lived growing up and then as an adult. Of course, she had a big heart and a passionate love for her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, other relatives and friends. She was always generous, sometimes to a fault. The positive sides to her personality certainly outweighed any negative characteristics. Cathy Vaught
