The disappointed youngsters gathered up their gloves and began scattering toward their homes. As 8-year-old Alan McDonadson left the field, he passed a "cargo net" which had just been put up at the playground three hours earlier. The youngster grabbed the chain net strung between a pipe frame and began climbing. There was a bright flash and a sharp crash. Lightning had struck the youth. Playground supervisor Linda Driver, who was at a picnic shelter about 100 feet away, rushed to the fallen boy, put out the fire in his shirt and began giving mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. Skip Hull, another playground director, who had been organizing the Softball game in which Alan was to play, saw the boy on the ground beside the new equipment and realized what had happened. While Miss Driver gave resuscitation, he dashed across Willow Street to a home to call the rescue squad. But it was too late. Alan was pronounced dead on arrival at Rockingham Memorial Hospital minutes later. The bolt which struck the youngster was the first to strike nearby from the storm which swept over the city minutes later. ... The young victim was the son of John B. and Mary Bell Long McDonaldson and lived with his parents and grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Emmor F. Long, at 668 Virginia Ave. Also surviving is a sister, Linda McDonaldson. Young McDonaldson was a member of the Harrisonburg EUB Church and would have been a fourth grader at Waterman School this fall. The body is at the Lindsey Funeral Home pending completion of funeral arrangements. (Daily News-Record, Harrisonburg, VA, Friday, July 21, 1967) The funeral for Alan F. McDonaldson, 8, who was killed by lightning Thursday afternoon at the Morrison Park playground in Harrisonburg, will be held 3:30 p.m. Sunday at the Lindsey Funeral Home. The funeral will be conducted by the Rev. Raymond Wiblin and the Rev. Thomas Coffman, and burial will be in Woodbine Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Kenneth Kesling, Tommy Muterspaugh, John Peale and Rickie Lee. Friends may call at the McDonaldson home, 668 Virginia Ave., Harrisonburg.
