Albert Adams Springs died at his residence in Georgetown, on the evening of October 4th, after an illness of one week. From an injury of one of his fingers which at first was thought to be of trivial nature, erysipelas set in and soon involved the whole right arm, rapidly extending up to the shoulder, with great pain and swelling. Notwithstanding the efforts of his physicians to check the course of the trouble and to sustain his vitality he became overwhelmed by the poison, and being in a rundown condition it was too much for his strength. Capt. Springs was born at South Port NC on the 26th of May 1852, and was in his 62nd year. He first started in business when he was quite young and at the death of his father the care of an only sister devolved upon him, and right nobly did he discharge his duties to her. He began his career on the old Tug Whipple, and followed the steamboat business all of his life, enjoying the confidence of all with whom he came in contact. He at one time commanded the tug Benj. Thatcher, owned by Congdon Hazard and Company and then built and commanded the tug Henry Buck. After several years he built the iron tug William P. Congdon and operated her successfully until two years ago when she was sold to parties in Savannah. Capt. Springs was probably the youngest Confederate veteran on record, having served when only thirteen years old, for a very brief period in Fort Steadman NC. He was the son of Capt. Joseph and Emma Garrison Springs of Wilmington NC and had many distinguished connections in the Tar Heel state. He was a genial and devoted friend and man, and as well known and beloved as any citizen of our city and there are few who will be missed as will Capt. Springs. He married at first Miss Alice Buck, youngest daughter of the late Hon. Henry Buck of Bucksville SC. After her death he married Miss Maud Morris of North Carolina, but she also preceded him to the grave a few years ago. He is survived only by a sister Mrs. St. J. M. Lachicotte of Waverly Mills and four sons and two daughters as follows: Col. H. B. Springs of Georgetown, Albert B. Springs Esqr., of New York, St. L. Springs now of North Carolina and Miss Alice Spring of Georgetown ; children by his first marriage and Charles Douglass and Margaret, children by his second marriage. He was a member of the Episcopal Church and one of the oldest members alive of the Winyah Lodge A.F. M. He will be missed, yes, but a man of the type of Albert A. Springs will never be forgotten, and his death has been a severe blow to many outside of his immediate family. He was laid to rest just before the setting of the sun, by the side of his first wife and three children in the Buck Family Cemetery at Bucksville SC on Monday afternoon with full masonic honors.
