Death Is Sudden After He Had Rallied From Operation Years of service in his own community and as a county official were brought to an end in the death of Albert A. Wharton of Holden township. His unexpected death was a shock not only to his family, but to his associates and friends. Mr. Wharton passed away Saturday afternoon at the Miller hospital. For some months his friends had known that he was not feeling well, but he continued on in his work as county commissioner. Friday, while at work on his farm, he became ill, and was brought to the hospital, where an immediate operation for gastric-ulcers was indicated. He rallied very well following the operation, and every hope was felt for his complete recovery. An embolism caused his sudden death late in the afternoon. In the passing of Mr. Wharton the entire county has suffered a great loss. A pioneer of the county, when this was still known as Dakota Territory, he grew to manhood on his father's homestead in Holden township. In this community, he took an active part in civic affairs, serving faithfully on the township board for many years. In 1928, on the death of F.C. Hudson, he was appointed as county commissioner from the first district, and for nearly twelve years served on the board. He was named chairman of the board three times, serving in that capacity at the time of his death, always in unison and harmony with his fellow members. While maintaining almost continuous residence in Holden township, the family lived for eight years in St. Lawrence. During his first year of residence there, he became a member of the Methodist church and served on its official board. When the Community church of St. Lawrence was organized he became a charter member. Of his life and character, words are empty to express the high esteem in which Mr. Wharton was held, and the respect he merited from all who knew him. The past few years have been arduous ones for the county board. But he met the problems with fairness, honesty and sympathy. Death came to him at the age of 66 years. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon from the Community church in St. Lawrence, and conducted by Rev. N.A. Luke. The great respect in which Mr. Wharton was held was shown by the presence of the many friends who crowded the little church and the yard to capacity to pay their last respects to their friend and neighbor. Pall bearers were selected from his close neighbors, and offices the (sic) the court house were closed, while officials and employees attended the service in a group. Surviving his death are his wife, the former Effie Burlingame to whom he was married in 1895, one son, Wayne Wharton of Colorado Springs, and two daughters, Mrs. William Bartlett of Rapid City and Mrs. Dwight Morrow of Alcester, S.D. and six grandchildren. ~~~~~~~ Ree Heights Review, Ree Heights, Hand County, South Dakota, Friday, October 6, 1939, vol. 29 #22, p1 c4 BURIAL RITES HELD FOR ALBERT WHARTON Miller, Oct. 3, - funeral services were held in St. Lawrence for Albert A. Wharton, 66 who died at the Miller hospital Saturday following an operation for a perforated stomach ulcer. He had been brought to the hospital Friday. Born in Iowa in 1873, he came to Hand county with his parents as a small boy and had spent the past 57 years in the county, living on a farm in Holden Township. He was active in the affairs of the county and was serving his third four-year term as county commissioner, serving as chairman of the board at the time of his death. Surviving are his widow, one son, Robert Wayne of Colorado Springs, and two daughters, Mrs. Will Bartlette of Rapid City and Mrs. Dwight Morrow of Alcester. Burial was made in Sunbeam Cemetery in Holden Township.
