As the gravel train, of which Bert McClure was conductor, was backing into the pit it struck a cow and threw the caboose off the track turning it completely over. Mr. McClure was caught under the car in such a manner that it was impossible to extricate him. He and his family are well known to our people, they having made their home here for a number of years. The train on which he was conductor was used in hauling gravel between there and Council Bluffs. The train crew was known to almost all the people along the line and Mr. McClure is highly esteemed by all who know him and had the fullest confidence of the company with which he has been associated for many years. The death of Mr. McClure will be deeply regretted by his many friends and companions for he was a most likable man endowed with many excellent qualities. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Jefferson Bee Thursday, September 5, 1907 DEATH OF A. B. McCLURE Brother of County Treasurer Killed at Northwestern Gravel Pit A sudden and terrible death overtook A. B. McClure, younger brother of County Treasurer D. B. McClure, at the North-Western gravel pit, four miles east of Jefferson, yesterday (sic) morning at 8 o'clock. Mr. McClure was conductor of the gravel train, and they were backing into the pit. He and two others were in the way car, and on a sharp curve a young steer suddenly ran out of the weeds upon the track. There was of course no cow-catcher or other tender on the way-car, and as soon as the wheels struck the animal the car left the track, the tracks going one direction, while the body of the car turned turtle, and as it came down, the corner caught Mr. McClure between the shoulders and buried him face down in the sand, killing him instantly. The other two men escaped practically unhurt. The remains were brought to Jefferson, and Coroner Dean impaneled a jury and held an inquest at the passenger station immediately, the verdict being that deceased had met his death by accident, substantially as stated above. He was a young man of the highest character, about thirty years of age, and leaves a wife and two small children at the home in Boone, whither the remains were taken yesterday noon, Mr. D. B. McClure accompaning them. The sorrowing relatives in this city and in Boone have the sympathy of the community in this appalling bereavement. ****** His father died before Albert was born. Survived by wife Eva May nee Ferguson and son Harrold, and daughter Katherine Emily.
