Funeral services will be Wednesday, Nov. 9, at 11 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, 1732 S. Main St., with Rev. Marcia Sylvester officiating. Heyd was born Nov. 3, 1919, at Long Lake, S.D., to Gustave and Rosina (Delzer) Heyd. He attended rural country school near Long Lake. He then worked for area farmers for a short time. He entered the United States Army on March 7, 1942, where he was involved with battles and campaigns in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes, and Central Europe. He received the Good Conduct Medal and the European African Middle Eastern Theater Service Medal. He was honorably discharged on Oct. 10, 1945. He returned back to the Long Lake area where he worked for area farmers. He then purchased a farm near Leola in 1947. He married Ardith Eleanor Zenker on Nov. 18, 1953 at Sacramento, Calif. They farmed in the Leola area. Ardith died April 24, 2001. Albert retired from farming in 2003 and he moved to Ipswich to live. Due to health reasons he became a resident of ManorCare Health Services in April of 2005. Albert was a past member of the St. James Lutheran Church at Leola and the Roy S. Hickman American Legion Post 78 of Leola. Survivors include three sons: Jerome (Linda) Heyd of Sioux Falls, S.D., Joallen “Joe” Heyd of Aberdeen, and Jack Heyd of Ipswich, S.D.; two daughters: Jerrillyn Heyd of Aberdeen, and Janet (Mike) Taylor of Wakonda, S.D.; one brother: Ernest (Glendora) Heyd of Aberdeen; one sister: Frieda Heyd of Manteca, Calif.; and seven grandchildren: Kristi, Brent, Cole, Dusty, Samantha, Chancellor, and Shea. Albert was preceded in death by his parents, wife, two brothers, four sisters, and one daughter. Honorary casketbearers will be J. Dave Williams, Vernon Rohrbach, Milbert Bender, and Ray Bain. Active casketbearers will be Jack Heyd, Loren Weber, Ron Heyd, David Heyd, Donald Heyd, and Dale Heyd. Organist will be Sonya Kempf. Soloist will be Brandy Scheller. Pianist will be Diane Hintz.
