Listen for the assembly bugle call. __________ The Farmers' Vindicator 18 October 1918 Pg 1 cl 4 Death of Albert Call Albert Call, youngest son of Dennis E. Call, was born on the farm in Bolton district, southeast of Valley Falls, December 17, 1896, and died in the Government hospital at Fort Riley, October 8, 1918, aged 21 years, 9 months and 21 days, after a short illness. The cause of death was lobar pneumonia. Bert, who made his home with his father and worked at farming and other labor, registered for the selective draft last June and was called to the colors at Camp Funston September 6. He was doing fine and learning to do his part in the war until he was suddenly stricken down with the dread disease. He was in the hospital only three days when he was called to join his sainted mother "over there" who passed away when Bert was only two weeks old. When he was a small boy his father moved to town where Bert attended school, grew to manhood, joined the M. W. A. and was well liked by all who knew him. He is survived by his father and his brother John of Valley Falls, and a sister Sadie Call in Ireland, where she lives with her uncle John Kerr. The body, accompanied by Corporal Palmer, was brought to Valley Falls for Burial Monday evening. From a short notice and the assembly bugle call by Prof. Davies, fifteen minutes before the arrival, at least one thousand people were assembled at the Santa Fe station when the Union Pacific train from Leavenworth rolled in at 7:15; the city band playing appropriate selections, for the occasion. Over the scene the mantle of darkness, pinned with the stars and a silvery moon, had fallen when the casket, covered in the folds of the stars and stripes, rolled along the wide platform to the southeast corner of the pretty depot, aglow with electric lights, where short funeral services were conducted by Rev. C. E. Holcombe. The presence of so many friends and neighbors was a fine expression of sympathy and sorrow upon the death of one who was the first of the registrants from Valley Falls to make the supreme sacrifice. The other soldier boys who are buried here volunteered or registered at other points. The procession, in which there were forty cars, was immediately formed and moved to Rose Hill cemetery where after a brief service by the pastor, the remains were laid to rest by the side of the grave of his mother, who he never knew, but will know her in heaven. __________ Card of Thanks We desire to sincerely thank our many friends and neighbors for their sympathy and kindness on the loss of our dear son and brother, Albert Call; for their beautiful floral offerings, and those kindly sent by his comrades of the 31st Company from Camp Funston.
