Atkins Succumbs to Influenza and Body Interred Here Monday Albert Earl Atkins, the first Gering soldier boy to meet with death in the service of the nation, died from the effects of Spanish influenza at Camp Dodge, Iowa, last Friday, and the body was brought to this city, the home of his parents, for burial, the service being held Monday afternoon. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. I. E. Atkins, and a nephew of Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Lobdell, and born at Elgin, Neb., on December 5, 1894, thus being aged almost twenty-four years. Besides the parents, there are five sisters, and one adopted brother. The Gering home guards had general charge of the funeral service, escorting the remains to the cemetery and interment was accorded with the military honors to which the young man was entitled by reason of his service in the army of his country. Rev. W. C. Rundlin of Mitchell delivered the sermon. The honor which is due to his memory is none the less because he had not yet been privileged to reach the scenes of battle, for he had entered into the army life with all the rare spirit of youth and was ready and anxious to get to the fighting front.
