Monday at the New Hope Christian Church in Marshalltown with burial to follow in the Prairie View Cemetery in Gilman. Flag presentation will be conducted by members of Paul-Ward Post #149 of the American Legion. Visitation times are: 12 to 5 P.M. Sunday at the Pursel-Davis Funeral Home & Crematory. Albert Edwin Ward, Jr. was born on December 4, 1923 in Gilman, Iowa, the son of Albert Edwin and Velma D. Drennen Ward, Sr. He attended grade school in Gilman, Iowa and later attended Kemper Military Academy in Booneville, Missouri. Following graduation he served in the United States Army during World War Two and was stationed in Alaska. After the service he returned to Gilman and worked at the lumber yard. On December 28, 1946, he was united in marriage to Jeanne M. Batesole in Grinnell. To this union four children were born: Mike, Ann, Jamie and Mary. He began his banking career with Citizens Savings Bank in Gilman, and together with his wife, they founded the Legrand branch. He retired in 1978 as bank president. During Al's career he was very active in the community with various civic and professional organizations. He served as mayor of Gilman and belonged to the Paul-Ward Post of the American Legion, Cyrus Lodge #338 AF & AM (Masonic Lodge), and various watch-making organizations. His hobbies included woodworking, watch-making, photography and his grandchildren. His eyes lit up everytime they came into the room. Al is survived by his children: Mike (Diane) Ward of Gilman, Ann (Lee) Johnson of Ames and Jamie Ward of West Des Moines, four grandchildren: Amy & Jamie Cope and Elizabeth & Alex Ward. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Jeanne in 1999, and his brother James J. Ward who died during World War Two. His daughter, Mary B. Ward, died the day after her father.
