Description	:	Albert Elmo Van Vleet was born December 13, 1911 in Adair county, Iowa, and passed away September 25, 1978 at Mercy Hospital, Des Moines, at the age of 66 years, 8 months and 13 days. He lived his entire life in the community of his birth, mostly in the Fontanelle community as a civic-minded citizen and businessman. Read More	Albert Elmo Van Vleet was born December 13, 1911 in Adair county, Iowa, and passed away September 25, 1978 at Mercy Hospital, Des Moines, at the age of 66 years, 8 months and 13 days. He lived his entire life in the community of his birth, mostly in the Fontanelle community as a civic-minded citizen and businessman. He was graduated from the Richland Consolidated High School where he was very active in sports, and attended Cornell College at Mount Vernon, Iowa, for two years. After returning from college he farmed for several years and then was employed by the Richland and Fontanelle schools as a custodian, and served as referee at sports events. His marriage to Dorothea Bohling took place Dec. 21, 1935 and they became the parents of three children, all of whom with their mother survive him. While employed as secretary of the Fontanelle Lumber Yard in 1944 he was drafted into Army Service and served as a dental technician with the U.S. Forces in France and Belgium. He received his honorable discharge in 1946 and after being returned to civilian life he and his wife purchased a grocery store from Mr. and Mrs. Otis Bailey. Two years later they purchased the Elmo Adams Hardware Store which they operated as the Van Vleet Hardware store until he retired in 1978. He is survived by his wife Dorothea; a daughter Phyllis and her husband Larry Raper; a son Eugene; a daughter Barbara and her husband Randall Bond; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren, his mother Cora Van Vleet of the Good Samaritan Center; and two brothers John Henry of Whittier, Calif., and Keith of Des Moines. He was preceded in death by his father Frank Van Vleet and a granddaughter Theresa Raper.
