Read More	Albert Franklin De Witte, 79, passed away Oct. 29, 2005, surrounded by his family at his home near Bozeman, after a two-and-a-half year courageous battle with COPD and lung cancer which ultimately spread to his brain. He was born July 18, 1926, at his parents' home on Reese Creek, north of Belgrade, to Frank "Tuffy" and Olive Estella (Gee) De Witte. He started school at Reese Creek School, just across the fence from their house, when his sister, Pauline, started school. He graduated from Belgrade High School at the age of 16 in 1943. Their graduating class was 50-year honored guests at the 1993 graduation ceremony, and he was honored by giving his granddaughter, Jody Lynn Kober, her diploma, a first in the history of Belgrade High School. Albert married Harriet Marie Stevens, Nov. 17, 1950, in Grand Avenue Christian Church in Bozeman. They lived in Bozeman and north of Bozeman until buying their first home in Belgrade in 1960, and lived there until 1968 when they bought their place two miles east of Belgrade on old Highway 10, now the Frontage Road. The couple had one daughter, Debra Diane "Debbie" De Witte. Albert lived at Reese Creek with his parents where he worked for Albert Seifert and Thomas J. Esgar, Reese Creek area farmers, before entering the service. He served two years with the Army 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division in the South Pacific, Philippines and Japan, and was honorably discharged in November 1946. He received the Army of Occupation Medal (Japan), Philippine Liberation Service Medal with one Bronze Star, Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and the Victory Medal. Upon returning home, he began working for Tom Esgar again until moving to Bozeman to live with an aunt, Hester (Hollen) Gee. He began driving for the Bozeman Ice Company, delivering block ice (in those days to ice boxes), and for the Betty Anne Bakery. After his marriage he continued working for Betty Anne Bakery for a year, then went to work for Gallatin Lumber Co. where he worked for 15 years until the business was sold. He then worked for several years for Henry Spomer, a home builder in the Belgrade area, and part-time at the same time for Harrington's, Inc. In July 1966, he went to work at Montana State (College) University as a custodian and became equipment manager for the P.E. department in 1968. He was forced to resign due to his health in January 1973. When he was able to return to work, he went back to work for Harrington's, Inc. in 1975 and stayed until August 1979. He then went to work for the Gallatin County Fair Board in September 1979, and worked for the Montana Winter Fair Board during the Winter Fair. He retired on his birthday in July 1988. Not being ready to quit altogether, he went to work part-time for Gallatin Industrial Park in Belgrade doing maintenance repairs until June 1998. Although Albert suffered with various health problems and had eight major surgeries over the years, he always managed to find a job, working very hard and conscientiously at whatever he undertook. Albert belonged to the Teamsters Local No. 53 and the Laborers Local No. 1334, Sons and Daughters of Pioneers, Gallatin Historical Society, and AARP. He also belonged to Belgrade Friends of Music when his grandkids were in school. He enjoyed hunting, especially bird hunting with his black Lab dog, fishing and camping and made many pack trips to the high mountain lakes to fish or just to ride the various trails. He really loved farm work and liked nothing better than being in the field on his John Deere tractor. He raised Hereford cattle for a number of years and had good quarter horses. He greatly enjoyed watching the animals (Herefords) being shown at the fairs and rarely missed a horse sale. Over the years, he accumulated quite a collection of "toys" given to him by his granddaughter, Jody, for Father's Day, birthdays and Christmas, and treasured the John Deere model tractors she gave him. Two of the toys retained from his childhood were a cast-iron John Deere Model "A" tractor with the driver and a team of cast-iron Percheron horses. His brother-in-law, George Haxby, built a model stagecoach and harness for the team and mounted it on a board with gravel roadbed. He was preceded in death by his father in 1983; his mother in 1975; sister, Frances (De Witte) Fisher in 1989; sister, Olive (De Witte) Randall in 1961; and nephew, Payton Lee Randall Sr. in 1989. Albert is survived by his wife of 54 years, Harriet; daughter, Debbie (Benny Leonard) Kober; granddaughter, Jody Lynn (Frank) Cutting Jr.; grandson, Benny Justin "B.J." Kober; great-granddaughter, Faith Kelly Kober; sister, Pauline (George) Haxby; as well as many nieces, nephews and numerous cousins.
