Veterans Day, observed today, was originally known as Amistice Day and was observed as such until 1954 when Congress changed the day to Veterans Day for the honoring of all veterans of American wars. Thore, 72 years old, also displays the weapon he carried during World War I -- a Colt automatic, 45 caliber pistol. The hat, coat, pants, holster, gun and putts [leggings] are in excellent condition after 46 years. The chevrons on his left sleeve are a red discharde strip and a gold one given for every 6 months overseas. His right sleeve bears his sergeant rank. Born in Kansas, Thorne has lived in Jasper County since he was 2 years old.
