The rapidly thinning ranks of South Dakota pioneers lost another of its members last night with the death of Albert Hartson Salisbury, who died at his home one mile South of the county line, in McCook County, last night. Death was caused by an intestinal obstruction. He was 90 years old. Mr. Salisbury had lived in South Dakota since 1879, when he moved to Dakota territory with this family from Iowa. He settled on a homestead in Ramsey Township in McCook County and lived on that place up to the time of his death. He was well known in this district and was reputed to be one of the best-read men and possessed one of the largest libraries in the vicinity. Mr. Salisbury was born in Madison, WI, March 3, 1847. A few years later he moved with his family to Iowa where he completed his education in carpentry. He was married in 1876 to Harriet Elizabeth Bodine, and three years later they moved to the Dakota Territory. One son, Lester and a daughter, Mrs. Bertha Killion, who both lived near him in McCook County, and seventeen grandchildren, survives him. His wife died in 1919, of cancer, and a son William Eugene, died in 1932 from the effects of the loss of an arm, sustained from a corn shredder accident. Two daughters died several years ago. Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon in the Hallenbeck funeral home with the Rev. Carl W. Stromberg officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery. Burial records are now being held at Elsworth Funeral Home in Madison, SD. In the photo with Albert and his youngest son William Eugene, it says, 1903 Going to Montana to look for Ranchland,. Point of interest of the photo is that Ida his daughter took the photo. They probably were going to Montana where Harriet and Two Dot Wilson were living, Harriet is one of George Washington's daugthers. Another descendant received this email from Roger Berke: This information came from the Busy Bee Club of Montrose, S.D. from a paper back book published in 1976 titled "Montrose Memories." This book is composed of family histories that were written by the individual families. The sources for this book were old newspaper files, county history, old private papers and visiting with older citizens. Albert Salisbury and Harriet Bodine were married in Knoxville, Iowa on February 28, 1876. They went in a wagon across country into S.D. in 1879, and soon after filed three claims. They put up a sod shanty on the homestead claim, the spot now occupied with the Wendall Buildings, until he could build a frame house east on a straight rise. Albert Salisbury was a carpenter and built several houses in the "Old Madison" near Lake Herman, before the town was moved. He had a brother, Eugene, a polio victim, who married Lizzie Todd of Salem and was clerk of courts, and was a judge for several years. Six children were born to Albert and Harriet.
