Description	:	SPRINGFIELD - Albert J. Proulx, 85, a former employee of the H. L. Handy Co., passed away on Friday, March 14, 2008. Born in Springfield on June 10, 1922, the son of the late Lucien and Mederise (Landry) Proulx, he moved to Chicopee at an early age where he resided for 25 years, returning to Springfield in 1959. He then was employed by Chicopee Provision Co. as a salesman until his retirement... Read More	SPRINGFIELD - Albert J. Proulx, 85, a former employee of the H. L. Handy Co., passed away on Friday, March 14, 2008. Born in Springfield on June 10, 1922, the son of the late Lucien and Mederise (Landry) Proulx, he moved to Chicopee at an early age where he resided for 25 years, returning to Springfield in 1959. He was employed at Handy's for 28 years as a salesman, and later at the former George Spencer Co. and Hampden Beef Co. as a foreman until 1983. He then was employed by Chicopee Provision Co. as a salesman until his retirement in 1987. Albert was an avid golfer and in his younger days had played semi-pro baseball, hockey and football, later coaching hockey and baseball for the Holy Cross Athletic Association for 10 years. He was an Army Air Force Radio Operator-Gunner on a B-17 Flying Fortress during World War II. After surviving a crash landing during a training period, he went overseas and flew 35 combat missions over France and Germany with the 351st Bomb Groups 8th Air Force out of Polenbrook, England. He received the Air Medal with 5 Oak Leaf Clusters and the ETO Ribbon with 4 Battle Stars for the Campaigns of South France, Rhineland, North France and Normandy. He was a lifetime member of the 351st Bomb Group Association 8th Air Force and a member of the American Legion Post 430 in Springfield. He leaves his wife of 59 years, the former Dorothy Petrin, a son, David A. Proulx of Hampden, a daughter, Elaine Spallacci of Springfield, a brother, Aurele Proulx and a sister, Lorraine Kurtz, both of Chicopee, 4 grandchildren, Tina Cash and Amy, Ashley and David Proulx, Jr., two great-grandchildren, Hailey and Hannah Cash and many nieces and nephews. The funeral will be held on Wednesday, March 19, 2008 at the Corridan Funeral Home, 333 Springfield St., Chicopee at 7:30 am. followed by a Mass in Holy Cross Church, 221 Plumtree Rd., Springfield at 9 am. Burial with full military honors will take place in Calvary Cemetery, Chicopee. Calling hours at the funeral home will be on Tuesday, March 18, 2008 from 3 to 7 pm. Memorial contributions in Albert's name may be made to the American Legion Post 430 Athletic Fund, 68 Court St., Springfield, MA 01103.
