At the age of 8 he entered school and was confirmed in the Lutheran faith at the age of 14 years. On Nov. 1866 he was married to Miss Wilhelmine Boehnke. With her lived a happy life until March, 1877, when she departed this life, leaving him a widower with five small children. A few years later he was married to Wilhelmine Haut. This union was blessed with eight children. In 1883 the deceased left his Fatherland and with his family came to the U. S. and settled down in the State of Iowa in the county of Hancock where has resided ever since. Mr. Jass was a good Christian, a kind father, teaching his household the fear and admonition of the Lord. He was a loyal supporter of the church, being a charter member of St. John's congregation and was always a willing and faithful worker. He and his family were among the first pioneers here and suffered the trials and hardships incident to that time. They proved worthy citizens in every emergency and were important factors in bringing about the high state of morals and progress that have been the reward of pioneers such as they. During the past years he suffered much and often spoke of his longing to depart this world and of his perfect trust in his Savior. He died on Thursday, Oct. 20, 1921, bringing the days of his pilgrimage to 85 years, 2 months and 5 days. He leaves to mourn his loss his aged wife, 4 sons and 6 daughters, a large circle of relatives and friends. The funeral took place on Monday, Oct. 24 from St. John's church to the adjacent cemetery. Rev. Koch of Galva, spoke in the German language, basing his discourse on Luke 2: 29-30. Rev. Maas spoke in the English language basing his discourse on Rom. 8: 18. The sympathy of the entire community is extended to the sorrowing wife and children.
