Description	:	~ CIVIL WAR VETERAN ~ Albert Jefferson Johnston was born Jan. 11, 1842, at Athens, Ohio, and died on June 11, 1927, having attained the age of 85 years and 5 months. He was the son of William and Louise Holmes Johnston. Burial was in the Ida Grove, Ida County, Iowa, Cemetery. "Jeff," as he was familiarly known, came with his father to Cedar County, Iowa, in 1855 settling on a farm north of Wilton Junction. Read More	~ CIVIL WAR VETERAN ~ Albert Jefferson Johnston was born Jan. 11, 1842, at Athens, Ohio, and died on June 11, 1927, having attained the age of 85 years and 5 months. He was the son of William and Louise Holmes Johnston. Burial was in the Ida Grove, Ida County, Iowa, Cemetery. "Jeff," as he was familiarly known, came with his father to Cedar County, Iowa, in 1855 settling on a farm north of Wilton Junction. He entered Cornell College, but laid aside his studies at the outbreak of the Civil War and enlisted in Co. A, 2nd Iowa Cavalry at Davenport, Iowa, on Sept. 2, 1861. He participted in the battles of Corinth on Nov. 10, Iuka, Island No. 10, New Madrid, serving out his 3 year period of enlistment engaging in many Cavalry fights up and down the Mississippi Valley and received his discharge Oct. 6, 1864. It is believed that he was the last surviving member of his company. He was married Dec. 5, 1865, to Catherine E. McDonald, and to this union 7 children were born. In 1881, the family moved to Ida County, Iowa, settling on a farm in Silver Creek Township where they lived a year or two and then came to Ida Grove, Iowa. Military honors were bestowed upon A. J. Johnston, Civil War Veteran, and a pioneer. Members of the American Legion were his pallbearers and a Firing Squad gave the last salute and the bugler sounded the taps. His wife, Catherine, and 3 children preceded him in death, William E. Johnston, Frank B. Johnston, and daughter, Jessie R.
