Nov. 13 at Riverside Cemetery, Sterling, Colorado. Albert Merrill McGruder, son of Elijah and Ethel McGruder, was born at Woodman [sic], Oregon on Sept. 2, `1905 and died at Hand Community Hospital, November 10, at the age of 66 years 2 months and 8 days. During his childhood, the family moved to the Hamilton, Ia. area where he attended school. In 1924 they moved to Colorado where he and his father farmed and he was later employed by the Burlington Railroad. On Oct. 8, 1929, he was united in marriage with Ethel Anderson at Knoxville, Ia. To this union was born one daughter. Mr. McGruder was employed at the Veteran's Administration Hospital in Knoxville for 14 years. In 1943 they moved to Colorado where they made their home and farmed for 8 years. They moved to Shenandoah in 1951 where he was employed at the Sondag Implement Company. He served with the Shenandoah Police Department for one year. For the past several years he has been employed as superintendent of mechanics at Shenandoah Nurseries. Mr. McGruder was a member of the First Christian Church, Tri-Centum Lodge No. 300 AF-AM and was a past noble grand of the IOOF. He was preceded in death by his parents. Surviving are his wife, Ethel, his daughter, Mrs. Edwin (Louise) Warnick, a brother, George, of Akron, Colorado, and his many friends. [The Evening Sentinel: 16 Nov 1971 page 3 cols. 1 & 2]
