Burial will be in Zion Lutheran Cemetery with military graveside rites by Fred Weller American Legion Post #186. Albert died April 24, 2014 at Eureka Community Hospital. Albert, son of Philip and Katherina (Zeller) Oster, Sr. was born September 13, 1918 on the family homestead eight miles northwest of Eureka in Campbell County, SD. When he was five years old the family moved into Eureka. He loved trapping mink, weasels and muskrats for income when he was a child. Albert attended Eureka Schools. He entered the United States Army October 26, 1942. He was stationed in England where he had many different duties, also France and central Europe and many bases in the United States. He was honorably discharged November 16, 1945 and returned to Eureka. He was united in marriage to Hulda V. Wolff on June 2, 1946 in Zion Lutheran Church in Eureka. They made their home on a farm just outside of town where they raised sheep, diary cattle, hogs and stock cattle. Albert and Hulda were general farmers and Albert farmed well into his late 80’s. Hulda died August 26, 2001 and Albert continued to live on the farm. Albert and Hulda loved to dance polkas and waltzes. He enjoyed hunting ducks, geese and pheasants and seldom missed what was in his sights. Trapping was a life long hobby and he loved to fish and ice fish. Everyday spent outdoors was always a good day. Albert is survived by his son, Lee Oster and twin daughters, Joyce (Lynn) Burke and Joan Oster, two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, one grandson, Nathaniel and 11 brothers and sisters, Mary Wolff, Henry Oster, Katie Knoepfle, Ida Oberlander, Emelia Harr, Emil Oster, Edwin Oster, Philip Oster, Jr., Frieda O’Kane, Alma Moore and Lillian Ernst. Carlsen Funeral Home of Eureka has been entrusted with arrangements.
