Born in Chiloquin, Ore., to Albert Russell and Blanch Edna (Hayward) Cartmel Sr., he spent most of his childhood in Mountain Home, Idaho. As a teenager, he moved to Port Townsend with his family. Cartmel Dec. 19, 1925 -- May 4, 2006 Albert R. Cartmel died of a heart attack in Kah Tai Care Center in Port Townsend. He was 80. Born in Chiloquin, Ore., to Albert Russell and Blanch Edna (Hayward) Cartmel Sr., he spent most of his childhood in Mountain Home, Idaho. As a teenager, he moved to Port Townsend with his family. He interrupted a career started in 1943 at the Port Townsend paper mill to join the Army in 1944. Serving in the infantry -- carrying a Browning automatic rifle -- Mr. Cartmel advanced into southern Germany at the end of World War II and, in 1945, went to Japan. He married Daisy Kilmer on July 9, 1945, in Port Townsend. Before returning to Japan for occupation duty, he went AWOL to visit his bride briefly and thus served KP all the way back across the Pacific, his family said. After the war, Mr. Cartmel and his wife raised six children as he spent 38 years at the paper mill before retiring. He taught his children to fly fish on the Hamma Hamma River, enjoyed duck hunting, playing horseshoes at family picnics on the beach and the card games hearts and pinochle. Survivors include his wife; sons Walt Cartmel and Will Cartmel, both of Port Townsend, Mike Cartmel of Bonney Lake, Bruce Cartmel of Medford, Ore., and Tim Cartmel of Kenmore; daughter Barb Guthrie of Priest River, Idaho; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Services: Today, May 9, 2 p.m., in Kosec Funeral Home, 1615 Parkside Drive, Port Townsend. A gathering will follow at the family home, 710 19th St., Port Townsend.
