Harding was born in Wisconsin in 1867 and moved to Dakota Territory in 1882 with his parents. He was graduated in 1892 from Dakota Agricultural College, later to become South Dakota State University. He earned a master's degree in American history, political science and economics from the University of Nebraska. From 1897 to 1943 Harding taught SDSU courses in history, political science, sociology and economics. In 1931 he was named head of the history and political science department, a position he held until his retirement in 1943. John W. Headley, former president of SDSU, paid respect to Harding at the time of his death: "In the passing of Professor Albert S. Harding, faculty members and former students agree that the college lost an all-time great teacher. "He was a true scholar endowed with a faith which inspired students to build soundly for their life's work." As a tribute to Harding, the Harding Distinguished Lecture Series was started at the University in 1963. Harding Hall on the campus of South Dakota State University is named for Albert S. Harding, former professor and head of the history department. Harding, class of 1892, is considered one of SDSU’s greatest educators.
