Description	:	Albert L. Slate, 74, died Monday, Aug. 20, 2001, at his home in East Jordan. Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 23, at Penzien Funeral Homes, Inc., in East Jordan. The Rev. Eugene L. Baughan of East Jordan United Methodist Church will officiate. Interment will be in Antrim City Cemetery, Atwood. He was born Jan. 19, 1927, in Detroit, the son of Harry B. and Inez (Brant) Slate. As an infant, his parents moved to East Jordan. He grew up and attended school in East Jordan until World War II. Albert joined and served as a merchant marine during World War II. After the war, he came back to East Jordan and graduated from East Jordan High School in 1947. On Jan. 12, 1957, he married Loreen Green in Hazel Park. They moved back to East Jordan on Dec. 28, 1958. Albert worked 35 years as a sailor on the Great Lakes for USS Steel, formerly Pittsburgh Steel. He retired in 1973 as chief engineer. Albert then worked full time at the East Jordan Co-op Store, retiring in 1989 and working part time until the present. Albert was a charter member of East Jordan Snowmobile Club and member of East Jordan United Methodist Church. He enjoyed woodworking, camping, fishing, having coffee with the boys in the morning and, most of all, he loved his grandchildren. Albert loved to gab. Al is survived by his wife, Loreen Slate, of East Jordan; children, Lynda (Jim) Page of East Jordan, Mike (Carmen) Slate of Boyne City and Pat Slate of Baxter, Minn.; three grandchildren, Zachary Slate and Mallory Slate of Boyne City, Bill Page of Bellaire; and several nieces and nephews.
