His long life was a continually unfolding opportunity to try new things and to turn everyone he met into old friends. "Dad was one of those people who traveled right through the century like it was the most natural thing in the world," his daughter says. "We were always one of the first to get something new, like TV. I remember the first time he sent a fax to my brother. He thought that was really cool. He was more than willing to jump into the next phase of technology." He took a bigger leap than that March 22, 1942, when he married Emma Laughlin in Brookings. There were 18 years' difference in their ages," his daughter says. Most men 41 may be prisoners of routine that makes a plunge into marriage unimaginable. My dad was never old. He always thought of himself as young and did young things," Skyberg says. "They were good companions," she says of her parents. The couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at Lake Preston Lutheran Church in 1992. His wife died the following year. Olson was born Dec. 9, 1901, to Arne and Louisa Stenson Olson on a farm in the North Preston Area. He was baptized and confirmed at Lake Preston Lutheran Church and farmed in the area. He continued farming until 1970. He coupled that career with one driving grain trucks. Even after he retired from farming, he drove trucks for several more years. It was an opportunity to get out and meet people, his daughter says. "It seems like dad made friends wherever he went. He made a difference wherever he went. He was so friendly and fun," she remembers. The unfailing fuel of friendship, he figured, was a hot pot of coffee. He was renowned for having one always at hand. He thought enough of the rest of humanity to enjoy its company at every chance. "There was nothing he liked better than a party,' his daughter says. "He loved his birthday. There was a great big party every year. Family reunions, he never missed them. He was in his glory." A lifelong member of Lake Preston Lutheran Church, he also thought it was his duty to make sure its ministers and their families always had a place to go on holidays. "Even after they went on to other places, they were still like part of our family," Skyberg says. That knack of thinking the best of his fellow creatures complicated parenting. "He was kind of like a big teddy bear," his daughter says. "My poor mother had to do the disciplining. Dad couldn't do it. I can't remember him raising his voice to us." Driving his three children two blocks to school, however, was no problem. His daughter Barbara Nail, of Olathe, Kan., remembers him carrying her that two blocks when the snow was deep. In retirement, he converted his truck garage into a palatial wood shop, and he taught himself to make children's toys and ornate plant stands. He delighted in a good card game, and he spent hours on the shores of Lake Whitewood casting to northern pike, with companions, of course. "He would very seldom do anything by himself," Skyberg says. "He was not a loner." He is survived by his two daughters; son-in-law Duane Skyberg, of Sioux Falls; his son, Wayne Olson, of Noblesville, Ind.: seven grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and his sisters Alvina Jensen of New Ulm, MN., and Nellie Larson of Sioux Falls. He is preceded in death by his parents, wife, four brothers, and six sisters. A funeral service will begin at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in Lake Preston Lutheran church, with burial in the North Preston Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 9 p.m. Monday in the church and before the service. Johnson-Henry funeral Chapel in Lake Preston is in charge of arrangements.
