Burgess had a heritage that he could be proud of, for his father, Walter Burgess of sturdy New England background, settled in Onawa 8 or 10 years after the town had been plotted out or to be exact in 1866. Burgess had a heritage that he could be proud of, for his father, Walter Burgess of sturdy New England background, settled in Onawa 8 or 10 years after the town had been plotted out or to be exact in 1866. Mr. Burgess was born August 4, 1871 at Onawa and passed away at his home here on Monday morning, June 10, 1963, at the age of 91 years, 10 months and 6 days. He was truly a pioneer of the community, having been a lifetime resident. He had been in failing health for several months. He was a graduate of the University of Iowa Law School in 1896 and for many years served as a Justice of Peace here in Onawa until 1960. Up until the time of his illness he had maintained an office just a few doors east of the Democrat office on Iowa Ave. He was a member of the Congregational church, 50 year member of the Vesper Lodge, A. F. and A. M., Sioux City Consistory No. 5, Abu Bekr Temple Shrine, the I.O.O.F., and Modern Woodman of America. He was united in marriage to Helen A. Allen on August 27, 1922 at Bartlett, N. Dakota. She was a former Onawa teacher and also City Librarian from 1915 up until the early 40's. Mrs. Burgess passed away December 16, 1950. His survivors include a number of nieces and nephews and other relatives. The Burgess Memorial Hospital, soon to be opened, was named in his memory, after his gift of $100,000 to start construction of the Hospital in Onawa. The funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 12th, at the Congreagational Church in Onawa. Rev. C. E. Hanan officiated. Interment was in the cemetery at Magnolia, Ia., with arrangements by the Pearson Funeral Home. Onawa Weekly Democrat: Thurs., 13 June 1963
