His wife, Anna Brandt, was also born in Jefferson Township on April 17, 1870. When Albert, 28 years old, and Anna Brandt, 18 years old, were married on April 27, 1888, they began farming on what is the Lyle Zieman farm in Grand Meadow Township, section of Clayton County, Iowa. It is told that in the days before telephones that Albert and Anna communicated during courting days by leaving notes in a certain culvert. John’s parents lived just north of where Albert settled and Anna’s parents lived on the next road east now referred to as Steglich place. They built many of the buildings on the place including barns, sheds and house. The furnace was not installed until the year after the house was built. At that time the carpenters stayed with the family while they worked at a place and had to be fed three meals a day. It was a very dry summer when the house was built and even the potatoes did not do well. The four children were born in four years. Times were not easy. They borrow money from the Dettmers at Garnavillo. Estella would tell how she and her father would make the trip by horse and buggy once or twice a year to pay the interest and something on the principal. Albert enjoyed working with horses. Many farmers would bring their fistula-infected horses for him to treat. He would pay $20 for the horse and when it was healed the farmer would buy the horse back for $25. He used May Apple roots to stuff the sinuous ulcer using a skinned lilac twig for a poker. In order to control the horse a twist was put around its nose. A twist was made by fastening a short rope or leather in a hole in a short broom handle. Albert developed a good business doctoring horses. He also raised colts to sell and to replace older work and driving horses. Breaking colts to drive was a hazardous job. Runaways were not uncommon. When Elmer was married in 1915 Albert and Annie moved to Postville. They rented the old Dr. Flynn house until they got their red brick house built at 117 East Military. They had a barn at the rear to stable horses. Later they built a single garage on the east side of the barn. During the summer they would often go to each of the children’s homes to hoe the gardens and to help with canning. Albert and Annie enjoyed reasonably good health throughout their lives. Annie did break her hip. It was the day before hip pinning. She had to be in traction at home until it healed. Albert spent his last months in bed at home because of a heart condition and weakness problem. Annie took care of him. Clinda and Estella took turns coming in the morning to bathe him and to take washing. Albert died peacefully on the afternoon of October 5, 1950. The next day, after they had eaten dinner, Annie slumped over next to Adaila and was gone on October 6, 1950. There was a double funeral. It was a beautiful way for them to go after being married for sixty-two and a half years.
