Her graveside funeral service will be held August 13, 2010 at Oregon Trail Memorial Cemetery in Bridgeport. Alberta was born the first child of Albert and Helen (Townsend) Dutton on April 11, 1918 in Melbeta, Nebraska. Alberta was named after her father, Albert. It was a 2 story red house and they had a big... Read More	Alberta Mayer April 11,1918-Aug 6,2010 Alberta Dutton Mayer, of Surprise, AZ, died Friday, August 6, 2010. Her graveside funeral service will be held August 13, 2010 at Oregon Trail Memorial Cemetery in Bridgeport. Alberta was born the first child of Albert and Helen (Townsend) Dutton on April 11, 1918 in Melbeta, Nebraska. Alberta was named after her father, Albert. She had one brother, Howard, who was 4 years younger. He lived in Irvine, California and was a retired pilot from Western Airlines. Alberta remembers the house she was born in. It was a 2 story red house and they had a big rubber tub that was put in the kitchen for the family baths. The parents would heat water on the stove to fill it. She said that she and her brother would hide in the kitchen cupboards while one of their parents would take a bath. Alberta's' family moved to Bridgeport, Nebraska when she was in 7th grade. She graduated from high school in Bridgeport, Nebraska in 1936. She loves to tell the grand-children that her dad was on the school board and that she was expelled from school 3 times—for riding on the back of her boyfriends' motorcycle during lunch, for lighting a match for her boyfriend's cigarette during lunch, and for putting lighter fluid down the center of main street and starting a fire. Alberta went to college at Denver women's college in Denver before the war. She then worked in the accounting office at the "Denver dry goods store" until she married. She married Don Mayer in Bridgeport, Nebraska on November 24, 1940. He served his country overseas during World War II. After his discharge, Alberta and Don stayed in Bridgeport and raised their children. Don passed away in 1994. Alberta and her husband had two children—Barbara (Houtz) of Sun City West, Arizona and Lee (Kim) of Peotone, Illinois. They have 4 grandchildren; Jill of surprise, Arizona, Patrick of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Tyler and Kara of Peotone, Illinois. She has one great-grandchild—Parker of Surprise. Alberta worked as director of welfare for Morrill county, Nebraska –retiring after 25 years. She started this profession with a pencil and typewriter, but had to evolve with that "dreaded" computer. She was well known in the state of Nebraska as a very diligent and compassionate employee. She served time as president of the Nebraska welfare association. She also was involved with the Morrill county fair and rodeo for 27 years. The rodeo is a well known and attended amateur rodeo. They ran 2 shows over the 4th of July and 2 shows over Labor Day each and every year. Her husband Don, was the secretary and accountant. Alberta was one of the timers. She would sit in the "crows nest" above the arena and use a stop watch to time the rides on the bareback and saddle-bronc riders, bull-riders, calf ropers, team ropers, and steer wrestlers. She always looked forward to the intermission with fireworks. She then could finally sit down on the floor and light up her cigarette. Alberta's' family was very involved on weekends arrowhead hunting all over the county. The family has a fine treasure of Indian artifacts and great memories of Sundays together. After retirement, Alberta enjoyed many hours of volunteering as a "pink lady" at a local hospital, watching her grandchildren play baseball, soccer and golf. She rarely missed any of their games, until she moved to Arizona in 2000 to be closer to her daughter, Barb. Alberta was an avid Nebraska Cornhusker football fan. She had her red Nebraska shirt on for every Nebraska game for over 50 years and never missed a game on TV. When living in Nebraska, the radio was always on during the game. She and her husband traveled to Lincoln, Nebraska to home games for years and years. She is survived by her children—Lee (Kim) and Barb (Houtz), 4 grandchildren—Jill (Brad), Patrick, Tyler and Kara, 1 great grandchild--Parker and 3 wonderful nephews and their wives—Gary (Yvonne) Ogard of Vista, California, Monty (Judy) Ogard of Bridgeport, Nebraska, and Ken Mayer of Sidney. Her husband Don, parents Albert and Helen Dutton, and brother Howard Dutton preceded her in death.
