Description	:	Alberta Margaret (Douglas) Breuklander died Wednesday, July 25th, 2012, at Rapid City Regional Hospital. She was 93 years old. Alberta was born August 5th, 1918, in Flat Top, Wyoming, to Lura (Runyan) Douglas and Frank Albert Douglas. She spent her childhood years in north central Nebraska, Grand Haven, Michigan, and Alliance, Nebraska. She graduated from high school in Alliance in 1936 and was a member of the... Read More	Alberta Margaret (Douglas) Breuklander died Wednesday, July 25th, 2012, at Rapid City Regional Hospital. She was 93 years old. Alberta was born August 5th, 1918, in Flat Top, Wyoming, to Lura (Runyan) Douglas and Frank Albert Douglas. She spent her childhood years in north central Nebraska, Grand Haven, Michigan, and Alliance, Nebraska. Alberta enjoyed sharing the story of her mother driving a covered wagon to Hulsey, NE, so she and her mother could live with Alberta's maternal grandparents until her father Frank returned from World War 1. She graduated from high school in Alliance in 1936 and was a member of the National Honor Society. She was soon employed as a telephone operator in that city. She commented that she was at work the day Pearl Harbor was bombed and "the switch board lit up like a Christmas tree". She married William Henry Breuklander on April 4, 1946. Bill worked on farms in Nebraska until they moved to the Prairie Hill Farm near Winner, South Dakota, in 1952. Together they operated that farm and raised their three daughters (Ann, Mary, and Peggy) until their retirement. Alberta's working life was devoted to being a full time mother and homemaker – a calling she thoroughly enjoyed. She was also active in the Lakeview Methodist Church, Tripp County Extension club, and, as her daughters were growing, the "Dog Ear Rovers" 4-H club. In later years she was very active in the VFW Auxillary and DAV in Winner, South Dakota. After retirement, Alberta and Bill moved to Winner. They enjoyed their retirement years traveling together throughout the United States until Bill passed away in 1991. Alberta always found great enjoyment in her grandchildren and great grandchildren, just as they enjoyed their time spent with her. She became known to all of them as "Grandma Bert". In later years Alberta greatly enjoyed her morning coffee with friends as well her many card parties. She was an avid reader and always had a book at hand. Her sense of humor was present to the end. Among those grateful to have shared her life are her daughters Ann Breuklander-Smith of Hermosa, SD and her fiancé Hugh Harty of Milesville, SD; Mary and John Gillaspie of Hill City, SD; son-in-law Joe Hockett of Winner, SD; sister Phyliss Ratliff of Greenwood, South Carolina; brother-in-law Roy Breuklander and his wife Florence of Valentine, Nebraska; sister-in-law Nellie Rhodes of Valentine, Nebraska. She is also survived by her grandchildren Jason (and wife Jill) Gillaspie of Hill City, SD; Jeff (and wife Teresa) Gillaspie of Pierre, SD; Rebecca Hockett of Pierre, SD; Joey (and wife Christy) Hockett of Pierre, SD; Michael Hockett of Sioux Falls, SD. Her six great-grandchildren are John, Jennifer, Justeena, and Javin Gillaspie of Pierre, SD, and Jeffrey and Jeremy Gillaspie of Hill City, SD.
