Funeral Home, Lake Andes, S.D. A.M. (Pete) Novotny was born on March 10, 1913, to Frank and Mary Ann (Blazek) Novotny in Lake Andes, S.D. He attended Howard Country School in Charles Mix County, S.D. He married Ida Harrison in Lake Andes in 1940. With the exception of living in California for a short period in the '40s, Pete had been a lifelong resident of Lake Andes, S.D. He was a prominent businessman in Lake Andes from the late '40s through the '70s, and his namesake, "Pete's Cafe," flourished for many years as a convenient stop over for travelers from all directions. Pete's Service and Cafe was one of the first 24 hour businesses in the area and never was a needy traveler turned away. His Texaco Service Station and bulk oil delivery (Lake Andes Independent Oil Company) were mainstays in the community for over 30 years. Pete was a board member of the South Dakota Independent Oil Jobbers and helped shape the future of the delivery of oil products within the state. He was an ardent waterfowl and upland bird hunter, and vowed when he lived in California for a short period during WWII that he would someday return to South Dakota, even if he had to "sell pencils" for a living. He was a lifelong member of St. Mark's Catholic Church, Lake Andes. Pete died on Feb. 6, 2007, at the age of 93, five weeks short of his 94th birthday, in the town he loved, Lake Andes. He is survived by his wife of nearly 67 years, Ida, Lake Andes, S.D.; sons, Gene Novotny, Lake Andes, S.D., Roger Novotny and wife, Nila (DeWald), Ft. Pierre, S.D. (formerly of Aberdeen), and Jerry Novotny and wife, Mary (Lee), Portland, Ore.; three grandchildren, Dr. Jill Hart and husband, Tom, Sioux Falls, S.D., Steven Novotny and wife, Brittany, Pierre, S.D., and Cary Novotny, Portland, Ore.; and two great-grandchildren, Tess and Makenna. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Mary; brother, Frank; and six sisters, Helen Kuhnes, Irene Novotny, Rose Bechen, Evelyn Johnson, Mary Novak, and Veronica Mumm, all lived and grew up on the family farm nine miles northeast of Lake Andes.
