Alcander Preston, aged 95 years, nine months, 21 days, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Alice A. Stowe on Silver street Sunday, Oct. 5, at 12 o'clock. He was born at Whitingham, Vt., Dec. 14, 1817, one of a family of 11 children of Capt. Samuel and Susannah (Patch) Preston. He lived most of the time at Whitingham, Vt., until 1864, when he moved to Halifax, Vt., living there until moving to Greenfield three years ago. He was twice married. His first wife, Miss Wealthy Porter of Rowe, died Sept. 21, 1849, and his second wife, Miss Jane Bolton of Rowe, died May 10, 1892. Mr Preston always took a great interest in town affairs, was lister, selectman and overseer of the poor many years. He was justice of the peace at Halifax for 25 years, holding that office when coming here. He never failed to attend town meeting, if able to go. He voted at every presidential election after becoming of age until the last one. Dec. 9, 1909, he fell on the ice and fractured his hip and has been confined to a wheel chair since. He never complained, always had a pleasant greeting for every one. He is survived by his daughter, five grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Martha Stickney of Dummerston, Vt., who is 93 years old. The funeral was at his late home Wednesday, Oct. 8, burial in the family lot in Halifax, where the funeral party was met by a company of friends and neighbors who gathered to pay their last tribute of respect to the memory of their friend. Mr Preston was the oldest man in Greenfield at the time of his death.
