The Rev. Gary Hatcher officiated at the services. Aletha Freese of Monticello died Tuesday, May 21, at Mercy Hospital, Dubuque, following an extended illness. Aletha Metz was born July 16, 1948 at McGregor, the daughter of Floyd and Florence Rubendall Metz. She received her education in the Sabula schools. Aletha Metz and Douglas Taylor were married March 17, 1968 and divorce in 1969. She married Harley Helle on December 12, 1969. The couple lived in Illinois and later in Monticello. They divorced in 1977. Aletha and Gary Freese were married October 27, 1978. The couple lived in Monticello where she was employed at Casey’s, John McDonald Hospital, RJ bowling Alley, Senior Home and Wal-Mart in Anamosa. The past 10 months she had been a long-distance operator for MCI in Cedar Rapids. The couple were divorced in 1990. She was a member of the Wayne Zion Lutheran Church. Survivors include a daughter, Clarissa Helle of Monticello; two sons, James Helle of Lakeland Air Force Base, Lakeland, TX, and Kirk Freese of Monticello; her father and stepmother, Floyd and Virginia Metz of Sabula; a sister, Melva Polkinghorn of Monticello; and two brothers, Terry Metz of Valencia, Spain, and Ronald Metz of Teeds Grove. She was preceded in death by her mother. Also surviving is a grandson, Derrick Hiler. Casket bearers were Harry Hanken, Ronald Picray, Steve Kremer, Ray Arduser, Paul Stiffler, Butch Mitchell and Jim Reuter.
