Alex was born Jan. 13, 1909, on a farm near New Salem in Morton County, the son of William and Frieda (Schellenberger) John. He was raised on the farm and attended school in New Salem. Alex helped on the farm until age 16, when he went to work for dairy farmers in the New Salem area. He married Emma Rieckmann, of Dickinson, on Dec. 3, 1933. They farmed on the Anna Wilkins farm for four years, before getting their own farm in the Judson area. There they farmed until 1959, when they moved to New Salem. Alex worked as a janitor for both the city and Peace Church, worked in the spring through fall for a dairy farmer north of New Salem and was an insurance agent for Morton and Oliver County Insurance Co. He retired from his various jobs in 1987. As a boy, Alex's leg was run over in a horse and buggy accident. Pain was his lifelong companion. However, he is remembered for not only his courage and perseverance but even more for his sense of humor, his lively conversation and for his love of music. Many called Alex friend; he touched each person in a special way. He was a lifetime member of Peace Church in New Salem. Alex was a man of integrity, a believer in the value of hard work and a truly fine, humble and sincere man. He was a devoted husband and loving father who inspired his family to achieve their goals. Alex and Emma shared a love affair spanning more than 70 years. Next to his beloved wife, Alex's children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the joys of his life. He loved God and his fellow man. His thankful spirit gave him a contented and peaceful countenance. Alex is survived by his wife, Emma, New Salem; his two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Beverly John, New Salem, and Leonard and Barbara John, Helena, Mont.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Laura and Bernard Iszler, Dickinson, and Loretta and Herbert Griffith, Poinciana, Fla.; nine grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Esther Evans and Margaret and Chris Mosbrucker, all of Portland, Ore.; and four brothers and sisters-in-law, Harold and Katy John, Sandpoint, Idaho, Richard and Adebelle John, Bismarck, Rudy John, Spokane, Wash., Hans and Clara John, Deer Park, Wash., and Norma John, Mandan. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Helmut, Herbert and Charles John; an infant sister, Alice John; a grandson, Christopher John; a brother-in-law, Bob Evans; and two sisters-in-law, Marion and Alice John.
