Farmington News, Friday, Nov. 10, 1911 SUDDEN DEATH OF PROMINENT DESLOGE CITIZEN Alexander Bess one of the best-known and most highly-respected citizens of the county, died at his home at Desloge, Monday afternoon. His death, occurring as it did after only a brief illness, came as a surprise as well as a shock to his many friends throughout the county. Mr. Bess' brief illness began on last Saturday and at no time up to the immediate time of his death was it considered serious either by members of the family or the attending physician. Mr. Bess first complained on last Saturday morning, when in company with his wife he started on a trip to Elvins. After going only a short distance from his residence he complained of a pain in his stomach and remarked to his wife that he wished he had not started. Before reaching Elvins he felt so badly that he returned to his home and called a physician. His illness was pronounced to be only a cramping orbilious colic. However, his condition was such that he was unable to leave his home any time during the two days preceding his death. At times his illness would appear to be very severe for a few minutes, but no alarm was felt over his condition. The physician made his usual call on Monday afternoon about one o'clock but found no serious indications. Shortly before three o'clock Mr. Bess suddenly became worse and death ensued in a few minutes before a physician could be summoned. Dr. Turley, who had been attending him, arrived soon after separation had taken place, and after an examination expressed his belief that death had resulted from mitral insufficiency, a form of heart trouble. But on account of the sudden death and the symptoms leading up to it, it was thought that death might have resulted from some other cause. The fact that Mr. Bess had eaten some fish at a restaurant on the night before his becoming ill caused some to think that he had accidentally gotten some poisoned food. The seeming peculiar circumstances connected with the death caused an inquest to be held. The investigation was conducted by Coroner J. H. English, assisted by Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Clyde Morsey. After hearing the evidence of several witnesses, the jury returned a verdict to the effect that death resulted from an unknown cause. As Mr. Bess had had slight attacks of heart trouble at various times during the past few years, it is believed by many that this disease was the probable cause of his death. The funeral occurred Wednesday. A short service was held at the residence at 9 o'clock a.m., conducted by Rev. Oscar Taylor, after which the remains were borne to the Christian church at Flat River, where an impressive service was conducted by Rev. G. O. Nations. Interment occurred at the Masonic cemetery at Farmington. Services were conducted by the Masonic order, were conducted by the Masonic order of which Mr. Bess was a member. He was also a member of the M.W. A. and Select Knights and Ladies lodges. Mr. Bess was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Bess and was born at Yount, Mo., and at the time of his death was aged 48 years, 4 months and 25 days. He had lived his entire life in Perry and St. Francois Counties. He moved to Desloge about 15 years ago and had resided there continuously since that time. He was an honest and highly respected citizen and the esteem in which he was held was shown by the large attendance of sorrowing friends at the funeral. He is survived by a wife, two daughters: Mrs. A. E. Upchurch and Mrs. A. N. McFarland, and two sons, Luther and Harry, all of Desloge. He also leaves an aged father and mother, two brothers: D. J. of Flat River and William, of Salt Lake City, Utah and four sisters: Mrs. A. J. Redcliffe of Yount; Mrs. William Crabtree of Farmington; Mrs. R. B. Riggs of Higdon, and Mrs. A. J. White of Yount.
