He married Peri Craft on Aug. 3, 1884, in Wapello County. They were later divorced, and then they remarried on July 17, 1902, in Wapello County. Evidently they were divorced again, as Peri married Ira Jim Mills on January 15, 1919, in Ottumwa, Iowa. She died in Chicago, Illinois. There also was an obituary in the "Ottumwa Courier" for him on March 11, and a funeral notice on March 12. I have transcribed both below. His death record and obituary both state that he was born in Ottumwa on Nov. 12, 1860, two years before the date carved on this stone. His death record and funeral notice also both state that he is buried here even though no death date has ever been carved on the stone. --------------- Obituary from "Ottumwa Daily Courier," Tuesday, March 11, 1952, Page 13: Native of Ottumwa Dies Monday at 91 Alexander Hartley, 91, of Ottumwa Route 4, died Monday at 1 p.m. at the Houk Nursing Home at 1054 Tuttle Street. The son of Phillip and Sarah Hartley, he was born November 12, 1860, in Ottumwa and had been a resident here all his life. Mr. Hartley is survived by two sons, Frank Hartley of Ottumwa and Pearl Hartley of Des Moines; two daughters, Mrs. Anna Speer of Pekin, Ill. and Mrs. Sylvia Mitchell of Chicago; 22 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, James Hartley of Ottumwa and Daniel Hartley of Davenport; and two sisters, Mrs. Rose Cline of Exline and Mrs. Emma Kincaid of Sacramento, Calif. His parents and one brother preceded him in death. Lee of the Salvation Army Citadel. Burial will be in Round Point Cemetery near Agency. Pallbearers will be Carroll Forney, Earl Saner, John Beck, and John Smith.
