Alexander McMurty (sic), who died in Shelbyville, Mo., Oct. 24th, 1882, was born in Garnett county, Ky., Sept. 22d, 1806. In 1831 he moved to Ralls county, this state, where he married in '38 and in '42 settled in Shelbyville and embarked in the mercantile business. Being a man of energy and industry, and a prudent manager, he, of course, succeeded in business, and after a time he retired to his farm, west of Shelbyville, where he spent many happy years. After his four daughters married, he left his farm and resided in Shelbyville. His second wife, whom he married in '48, preceded him to the other world a year or two. While in Ralls county, Mr. McMurtry was county treasurer for two years. He never was, however, a politician or an office seeker. He was a large land owner in this county, and at one time the heaviest tax payer in the county. He united with the Presbyterian church in 1860 and was ordained elder in 1865, and he contributed $500 toward the erection of a church in Shelbyville. He was always a kind hearted, liberal and scrupulously honest man, and respected by all. Rev. Dr. Cochran, of Ralls, preached his funeral. Shelbina Democrat, Shelbina, Missouri, November 08, 1882; page 1, column 3 Alexander McMurtry, a well known and highly respected citizen of Shelbyville, died yesterday--Tuesday--at two o'clock p. m. The funeral services, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Cochran, will take place from the Presbyterian church in that city at 10 o'clock a. m., tomorrow, Thursday,--October 26th.
