The people of this community have learned with deep and sincere regret that Alex. Bishop is dead. He received serious injuries in the cyclone, but was thought to be almost out of danger, when, on Wednesday, his strength began to fail, and Thursday morning he passed away. He was buried this afternoon at the Wright cemetery with the beautiful ceremony of the Masonic order, of which he has long been a member. Few men in Chandler had been better known, and none more thoroughly respected, than Alex. Bishop. Honest and careful in his business dealings, unselfish and cordial in his associations with his fellow-men, and tender and thoughtful in his family relations, he was valued as a citizen and business man and sincerely loved and trusted by his children. It can surely be said of him that he had not an enemy, and the people of Chandler and vicinity, recognizing the loss the community has sustained in his death, extend a truly heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved members of his family. The Publicist. (Chandler, Okla. Terr.), Friday, April 30, 1897 BIOGRAPHY OF ALEX BISHOP Alexander Bishop was born at Belfountain, Logan county, Ohio, January 4, 1832. When he was 7 years of age, his parents settled in southern Illinois, remaining there seven years. They then returned to Ohio, where the subject of this sketch lived until 1855. On the 24th of September of that year he was united in marriage to Miss Almira Elliott, and they at once removed to Postville, Iowa, where they resided for fourteen years. During that time Mr. Bishop was engaged in cabinet making, which he had learned when a boy and also in the business of contractor and builder, being highly successful in both occupations. It was here that all of his children except the two youngest were born. In 1860 he settled near Oswego, Labette county, Kansas, then a new country, and engaged in stock raising and farming. Here was established a home which was a home indeed, not only to his own children, but, at several different times, to orphan children as well, who found in that home a refuge until they could successfully battle with the world, too few of whose people would receive them with the welcome kindness extended to them in their foster home. As his children became old enough to understand the details of business, he trained them in the careful habits which made his career financially successful. For a number of years he and his older son were joint owners of a large cattle ranch, in the Cherokee nation. A feature of the training he gave his children was to interest them with him in business enterprises, while at the same time he inoculated in them the principles of justice and charity, the observance of which made his life a success in the wider, truer sense, and which will, we trust, make them worth successors of a noble father. From this happy Kansas home, fraught with its potent influences for good, all of his children went forth to homes of their own, except his two youngest daughters, May and Maud, who came with him to Oklahoma. From this home the faithful, loving wife and mother, in 1887, also went forth to a new home, the wide, free home of the unfettered soul. Falling prices and consequent depression in the stock and farming industries led him to sell the old home in Kansas and locate in the "Land of the Fair God." He came to this county in July, 1903, his two sons being already located at or near what is now the town of Parkland. Since that time he had had financial interests in this county, and in April of the following year he located in Chandler with the two daughters who remained at home. From that time to the day of his death, he was closely identified with the interests of Chandler, both in a business way and as an active worker in every movement which tended toward greater liberty of the human race. Over forty years ago he became a Mason and rose rapidly in the order, having been Master Mason while still a resident of Postville, Iowa. He was of English descent, his ancestors having settled in Virginia at an early date. From that state his father moved to Ohio, while the northwest territory was still a new region. All of his children survive him. There are five daughers, Mrs. Florence Illingworth, of Bartlette, Kansas; Mrs. H.R. Vollmar, of Columbus, Kansas; Mrs. W.E. Acker, of Atlantic, Iowa; Mrs. Frank Anderson, and Miss Maud Bishop of Chandler, and two sons, S.W. and Frank, of Parkland. Altho Mr. Bishop was 65 years of age, one did not think of him as being old, because of the active life he led. He had ever been a busy man, head, hand, and heart being equally occupied. He was a modest, unassuming man, but with his business tact, his excellent judgment, his high sense of right and justice, his broad-minded charitableness and his unbounded sympathy for the unfortunate, he did a vast deal of good in the world. Chandler could ill spare him, and the whole world has need of such men. He is not dead whose memory springs ever fresh in the hearts of his fellow men and whose good deeds live after him. The lesson pressed home upon every heart by the example of his noble life teaches the relative value of the things of the world. May all choose as wisely and as well as he did.
