On Saturday last, another link connecting the past with the present was severed by the death of Mr. Alexander Kelly, one of Warwick's early settlers, who passed away on Saturday 9th April, in his 88th year at the residence of his daughter, Mr. John Bambridge, of Watford. The subject of this sketch was born in Bellagrany, County Monaghan, Ireland, on 11th January 1811. When a young man, he was employed for a time as coachman for Arch-deacon Russell. He came to Canada in 1837, the year of the McKenzie Rebellion, coming by way of New York, on a sailing vessel which required three months to cross the Atlantic. When he landed, his cash consisted of two shillings and six pence. He made his way to Long Point, and engaged with Mr. VanNorman, who owned a furnace business. He remained in his employ for some time, working himself up to the position of foreman of the establishment. He came West in 1844 and purchased Lot 21, Con. 6, S.E.R., Warwick, where he continued to reside up until the last year or so when he made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Bambridge, in Watford. In 1847, he was married to Mary Mitchell, of Warwick, Rev. Mr. Mockridge, incumbent of the Church of England, performed the ceremony, and by their united energy, honesty and industry, made a comfortable home for themselves in what was then the virgin forest. They lived happily together until October, 1863, when Mrs. Kelly was called home at the age of 37 years. Mr. Kelly continued to live with his sons until his removal to Watford, where he spent the balance of his days. Four sons and two daughters survive him; William and Daniel of Brooke; Robert J. of Enniskillen; Alexander of Sarnia; Mrs. Lucas of Brooke and Mrs. J. Bambridge of Watford. In politics, he was always a staunch Conservative. He owned the first horse in this part of the county, and it was in great demand on funeral occasions, it having conveyed twenty-one bodies to their last resting place. Wolves were very numerous in the early days and the farmers had to lock up their sheep at nights to prevent them from being destroyed by these prowling beasts. On one occasion, Mr. Kelly had a lamb killed in broad daylight by these savage marauders. He built a saw mill on Brown's Creek, which runs through the farm, the ruins of which were visible until a few years ago. The log house he erected when he came to Warwick, still stands on the old homestead, one of the few remaining landmarks of the county. His was the largest house in the neighbourhood, and as there were no churches in the district in those days, the Rev. M. Mockridge frequently held service there. Mr. Kelly also had the honor of having the first stove used in these parts, which he made himself while employed at Long Point. On his way to Warwick, his party came across a peculiar looking object crossing the trail, which they managed to kill. It proved to be a rattlesnake, with nine rattles, and which was as long as Mr. Thomas Shirley who was present. As they were all from the land from which snakes were banished, the snake was a great curiosity to them. The funeral on Monday afternoon was very largely attended by relatives, old friends and neighbours, the service being conducted by the Rev. J. Downie, B.D..
