Description	:	Alexander M. Gordon was born January 29,1842, in Methel, Fifeshire, Scotland, son of James & Betsy(White)Gordon. His father emigrated to Cleveland, Ohio later that year. Two-year-old Alexander & his mother came to the USA to join his father in 1844. He attended school and assisted his father until the outbreak of the Civil War. Alexander M. enlisted at the age of 19, on Dec 18,1861, as a Private, in a company in the 45th Regiment of Ohio Volunteers. This unit was later consolidated with the 67th and was known as Co. "G", 67th Ohio... Read More	Alexander M. Gordon was born January 29,1842, in Methel, Fifeshire, Scotland, son of James & Betsy(White)Gordon. His father emigrated to Cleveland, Ohio later that year. Two-year-old Alexander & his mother came to the USA to join his father in 1844. He attended school and assisted his father until the outbreak of the Civil War. Alexander M. enlisted at the age of 19, on Dec 18,1861, as a Private, in a company in the 45th Regiment of Ohio Volunteers. This unit was later consolidated with the 67th and was known as Co. "G", 67th Ohio Volunteers. With his regiment he served through the campaigns of West Virginia, Cumberland, Maryland and Winchester, Virginia and many other campaigns. He was promoted to Sergeant. He was wounded July, 18, 1863, at Fort Wagner, S.Carolina, receiving a wound in the muscle of his right arm, disabling him for duty until the following September. His unit became a part of the Army of the James, and reenlisted for 3 years or until the end of the war. For 200 days they were under fire. He was slightly wounded at Wier Bottom Church in Virginia, and on October 13, 1864 he was wounded in the left shoulder, at Chapin's Farm, Virginia, the bullet lodging under his left shoulder blade, where it remained. Alexander was sent to the hospital at Fort Monroe and from there was sent to Cleveland General hospital, from which he was discharged for disability on July 17, 1865. (For more details, see MEMORIAL RECORD of the COUNTY of CUYAHOGA AND CLEVELAND,OHIO, 1894, pp253 & 254) Alexander married Ellen D.( ) Gordon, who died at the age of 73,in her home in Bedford, Ohio, March 2, 1922. She was buried in Bedford Cemetery, Bedford, Ohio. Alexander was a well-known citizen of Bedford, Ohio. He was an extensive map and atlas publisher. He was a member of Bedford Royal Dunham G.A.R.Post #177. He died in Bedford. Bedford Historical Society Records say "died from an accident." ( A descendant says Alexander was struck and killed by an automobile while crossing Broadway, near downtown; that he was the first person in Bedford to be killed by a car.) Alexander was buried Nov 19, 1921, in Bedford Cemetery.
