He, his mother (Catherine McHARDY McARTHUR) and brothers Neil and Colin and sisters Mary, Janet, and Isabella left Scotland about 1851 to migrate to Canada. His widowed mother died on the long journey and was buried at sea. Colin left Canada to return to Mull for a bride but was not heard from again.
